Last night, we held the first community meeting of the campaign here at the HQ.

We had about 34 people in the house, a good number for the type of meeting.  A majority were seniors from the neighboring buildings.  The purpose of the meeting was to have the Mayor listen to people as well as talk.  The questions were great.  I think the technical term for the neighborhood surrounding the HQ is Cathedral Hill.

The people up here on Cathedral Hill had questions about panhandlers on Van Ness, concerns about the growing problem of prostitution (stemming from Polk St), car break-ins (one woman had her car robbed, windows smashed, 3 times in the last year), problems with MUNI (rude drivers, delays, bunching, and questions about the proposed Chinatown Subway), and city workers collecting too much overtime.  There was an extended conversation about the WiFi initiative that the Board of Sups might shoot down.  I reckon that people attending a neighborhood meeting on a Tuesday night are going to be a bit more aware of local issues but I was amazed by how familiar many of them were with the ongoing minutia of city government and the Mayor responded with a deluge of facts and his own ideas for the future; making for quite a meeting.

The meeting went on a bit longer than we expected but everyone had a lot to say.  Afterwards, we snapped a few photos and a lot of people signed our WiFi petition.  You can check that out by following the link below.

Brian shot a video of the meeting and even remembered to the take the cover of the camera.  Hopefully, he will post the video on the site once he finishes his breakfast.

If you want to help us host a community meeting in your neighborhood or down here at our office, please contact the campaign.
