Our next stop today is the Linden Lab for a 3PM Second Life event.
Mayor Newsom will appear in Second Life for a conversation with Linden Lab's Philip Rosedale/Philip Linden. Mayor Newsom just said we must implement a congestion pricing plan to protect our environment and help draw residents out of their cars.
"We must design this congestion pricing plan so that it works for San Francisco and is not overly burdensome to working San Franciscans.
This is our future – we can hide from it or we can lead the process to shape it.
I look forward to working with all of you to shape it – so that congestion pricing is affordable for working, middle class families who need to drive Read more »

Mayor Newsom just thanked Mayor Dellums, Mayor Reed and others in the Bay Area for working together to craft this plan.
"We know that keeping San Francisco safe means more than fighting crime. That’s why it was such a milestone last week when the Bay Area launched California’s very first regional emergency coordination plan in our state and nation’s history," Newsom said. Read more »

From Newsom:
"Today I am calling on our School Board to join with me in crafting a community service requirement in all of our public high schools so that public service is a common expectation – a right of civic passage for all of graduating students."

Mayor Newsom just pledged to make San Francisco carbon neutral by the year 2020.
"It is a daring challenge – but we will make it a reality by building on our pioneering initiatives – a carbon tax and a local carbon offset plan, a 100% biodiesel fleet, a landmark solar incentive program, a green collar jobs tax credit and innovative green building requirements," Said Newsom. Innovative reforms like our Ten Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness, Care Not Cash and Homeward Bound have helped 5,460 individuals exit homelessness.
We’ve advanced by leaps and bounds – but there is still a long way to go. An important next step is bringing a Community Justice Center to San Francisco. We need you to act locally today to make this reform a reality.

On Thursday, labor came out in force to show that they are behind Mayor Newsom and his vision for San Francisco. There were a sea of orange shirts at the AT&T Park. It was very impressive. I want one of those shirts.
The room was packed with well over 300 people. Chants of "four more years" broke out throughout the rally. There was a ton of positive energy in the room and a lot of tasty popcorn.

Sfist is blogging about the Yahoo Be a Better Planet Contest.
From mattymatt:
"How can it be true that San Francisco is less green than Pelzer, South Carolina, or Hastings, Nebraska, or Fairfax, Virginia? Those are some of the cities beating out SF in Yahoo's greenest-cities contest. But you can make a difference! We've already jumped from 168th place to 16th, and your signups can push us up even higher. Plus, you get a free light bulb out of the deal. No more stumbling around when the sun goes down!"
Just checked and Read more »

I want to remind you about a cool contest that is going on and an easy way to Act Locally to earn free, energy-efficient light bulbs. Yahoo! is running a contest called "Be a Better Planet" that is giving away compact fluorescent light bulb for free.
If every home in America replaced just one traditional light bulb with one of these energy efficient bulbs, it would be equivalent to taking 800,000 cars off the road. Read more »

Thank you to all the people who showed up at City Hall today in support of free WiFi for San Francisco. The turn out was incredible. There were bus loads of people at the rally and hearing. The Board of Supervisors meeting room was packed and so was the overflow room. It was a very impressive turn out. People were still testifying last time I looked online around 3:45PM. San Franciscans want their free WiFi.

In the last few hours, more than a thousand people have signed our petition to bring a community court to the Union Square area to address quality of life concerns and connect more homeless people with services they desperately need.
It's clear from this overwhelming response that a majority of San Franciscans support this plan. But, we want to hear from more of you. So, please send the petition to your friends and co-workers and ask them to stand with you in support of a community court for San Francisco. We need your help. It Read more »

We have had a tremendous response to an email we sent out yesterday afternoon asking people to support the Mayor's plan to bring a community court to the Union Square area to address quality of life concerns and help make sure more homeless San Franciscans are connected to social services. Hundreds of San Franciscans signed the petition to bring the new court to the Tenderloin within minutes of the email being sent.
Many of you have written into ActLocallySF.org in support of the plan like James Ash:

Gavin Newsom's 2007 campaign for Mayor is all about letting San Franciscans speak their minds to make government work better for all of us. And it's working. We have received more than 1,500 Pet Peeves and Smart Solutions since we launched this feature on ActLocallySF.org a couple of weeks ago. I want to thank each and every one of you for submitting your ideas.
I assure you that Mayor Newsom reads every single one of your suggestions or concerns. He often starts our MeetLocally events by talking about the latest Pet Peeve Read more »

It's been a while since my last post....sounds like a confession. I guess it is in a way. So, I've been busy trying to get more content for the site. Speaking of...we just published an article by Asmb. Lloyd Levine on his bill to ban the sale of incandescent light bulbs by 2012 in California. I think it's a great idea, here's an excerpt:
It takes 18 seconds to change a light bulb – but that 18 seconds can make all the difference to our environment, as well as California’s energy future. The goal of the legislation is to Read more »
