Hope everyone had a great weekend. I did. Took the dog - Axel on a long walk on Saturday. I guess he’s a little out of shape. A little kid riding his bike stopped to say, "Daddy…look at the chubby dog."

So, I’ve been watching the Discovery Channel’s Plant Earth. It’s pretty cool — seeing a Great White in slow motion. If you didn’t see it this week, I suggest checking it out (even though there is a commercial like every 4 minutes). Speaking of TV we have taken the Act Locally SF to the street, Gavin wants to find out what’s bothering you about the city and how to make things better. We want your ideas. Here he listens to a San Franciscans idea about expanding NextBus.

If you see Gavin going around the city with a camera crew — this is probably what we’re doing. So, stop and talk with us. We’re tentatively scheduled to be out about town next on Saturday, April 14th. We’ll be releasing more of your Pet Peeves on TV over the next week.

What else, we’ve got a new article on the site by the real life star of The Pursuit of HappynessChristopher Gardner. He talks about homelessness in SF and creating more affordable housing for families. There’s a lot more that needs to be done:

Some of you may already be familiar with my story from reading my autobiography “The Pursuit of Happyness,” or seeing the movie with Will Smith that was based on one frightening year of my life.  Perhaps I’ve even met a few of you at events or walking on the streets of San Francisco.  Today you might recognize me, but twenty-five years ago you probably wouldn’t have given me the time of day.  In the early 1980’s I was just another statistic – a homeless man in San Francisco, sleeping in shelters, on park benches, in the MacArthur BART station bathroom, trying to create a better life for my son and me.

There has been little progress in reducing homelessness among families in San Francisco – the lack of affordable one, two or three bedroom apartments being the chief obstacle. With the federal government abandoning public housing, pressure has increased on localities to come up with creative housing solutions.  I applaud Mayor Newsom for recognizing this crisis and for his new initiative of the $3 million family rent-subsidy program that could double the number of homeless families housed in the next year.

All right back to Planet Earth.

-Brian
