I’m new to this blogging thing, and figured I’d start out with something positive that happened to me this morning. I noticed a couple of days ago that someone has left about 10 white garbage bags filled with paper, etc. on the street corner in front of my building. As I help to keep my apartment building and the surrounding area clean as part of an agreement with my landlord, I was frustrated to see this morning that they still remained there.
I decided to dial 311, our new answer to every non-emergency need here in San Francisco, and had a great experience. Not only was my call answered within seconds, but the operator that I spoke with informed me that this wasn’t dumped garbage, as I had thought. It was actually the work of the DPW, in connection with the Clean Corridors program. They had come by and picked up the litter around our block, and there must have been a disconnect between those picking up/bagging the litter and the DPW trucks who are supposed to retrieve the bags from street corners. A few hours later they have already been removed by the DPW, so it’s all taken care of. I was extremely impressed by how this was handled, and by how easy it was to call 311 and get the situation resolved, painlessly.
