This city has a tremendous problem that continues to plague its residents and visitors alike, and that is the aggressive panhandling that occurs around Union Square. Guests in our city compare it with visiting a third world country! If San Francisco wants to continue to attract tourist dollars, this issue must be addressed. As a Union Square merchant, I’ve tried contacting the mayor’s office, but to no avail. I have also spoken with the police department about having foot patrol in the area, but they say there is not enough funding. I hear constant complaints from visitors to our city, and they are not just irritated, they are many times frightened.
It’s time to deal with this issue.
