The continuing problem with the "hard core" homeless in our neighborhoods and parks needs to be addressed aggressively. I’m all for Care Not Cash and the Community Courts Initiative, but Mayor Newsom needs to realize that homelessness is still plaguing lots of SF neighborhoods and causing a serious decline in our quality of life. I’ve lived in the Haight Ashbury for 17 years, and I have so many horror stories about encounters with homeless people in my neighborhood that I could fill hundreds of web pages! My personal favorite is the time that my 11-year old nephew was visiting from out of town, and a homeless person yelled, "F*** you!" right in our faces for absolutely no reason. Try explaining that behavior to a traumatized 11-year old! On my daily shopping trips on Haight Street, I often see tourists getting harrassed by teen runaways and the hard core addicts that make Haight St. their home. When we do try to call the police to respond to really out-of-control behavior by homeless people in our neighborhood, such as someone screaming underneath our bedroom window in the middle of the night or fights between the homeless people who camp in the Panhandle, the police response takes forever. Finally, lovely Golden Gate Park is still getting trashed by homeless encampments. I walk in the Park in the morning, and I see the same homeless people camping out in the same spots, day after day. It’s gotten to the point where I’m embarrassed for my city when people visit me from out of town. We need to do better.
