I’ve lived around the world, even in NYC, and never had a problem with car security; but within 2 months of moving to SF, my car was broken into on the street. In Pac Heights no less! I encountered general apathy from the police, and, when I talked to my friends, learned that just about everyone who lives in this city has had their car broken into. I find it rather laughable that the parking monitors are so well organized and anal (within my first couple months here, I also received over $300 in parking tickets) because it actually generates money for the city, but when it comes to the residents’ security and property rights, the problem is overlooked. Maybe it’s a homeless problem, maybe it’s a street patrol problem; whatever it is, it needs action. If the city can afford to pay people to run around the streets all day in their little go-carts writing tickets, why can’t they use some of the funds from all the tickets to also patrol the streets at night??
