Mayor Newsom,
I work down on Fremont Street on the swing shift. My schedule lets me off work at 9:30 pm at which point I take Muni to get to my home in the Sunset. Currently, Muni is working on the overhead wires in the tunnel at the time I start my commute home. I understand the importance of this upgrade, but I have a suggestion on how Muni handles the trains that go outbound from the West Portal station on the K, L, and M lines. As background, I take the Castro Shuttle to Van Ness, catch the surface KLM, and transfer to the L at West Portal out bound. The Castro Shuttle and KLM surface bus are generally quite prompt, but there is this awkward ballet of K, M, and L trains turning from inbound to outbound and blocking each other and generally burning up time, that gets to be frustrating when you have already spent 45 minutes or so to get home. My suggestion is that rather than having the trains turn around at West Portal, why can’t the inbound M and K lines become out bound L trains in West Portal and the inbound L trains become outbound M or K when the reach West Portal? This approach would keep the traffic flowing, and, from observation, it seems there is a greater volume of passengers waiting for the outbound L at that time of night than outbound M or Ks. I understand the need for construction on the Tunnel, but I think my suggestion would be a better way to keep the traffic outbound from West Portal flowing. Thank you for your time.
