I don’t have kids yet but we are thinking about it. I’m baffled about the school situation, as it seems like so many people must send their kids across the city to a school they don’t want and with no way to get the kids there. No school buses, from what I hear; either the working parents need to somehow get their kids across town before work and pick them up there after work, or the young kids have to navigate Muni. No school buses from what I hear. I’m all for increasing diversity and equal opportunity, but the practical aspect is that if people can’t get their kids to their schools because of their work schedule, and don’t want to risk their kids on Muni every day, then they have no choice but to choose private school (expensive) or leave SF. And then I keep hearing officials wringing their hands about how so many families are fleeing the city and we don’t know why, and what can we do about this huge problem? It’s a no brainer to me. If you live right near a school, your kid should be allowed to go there, and if the city forces your kid to go far away, then the city should provide the means to get them there. All official complaints about the shortage of kids in SF should cease until SF can say it is actually trying to solve that problem rather than looking the other way under the guise of equal opportunity. Here’s one more thought, coming from somebody who is considered a liberal anywhere other than SF… yes, the schools need to be good for families of lower income as well as higher income, but if you induce everyone with sufficient means to send their kids to private school, then the very parents who should be able to pump money into their public school system will not be there.

you are so right! this is a big challenge for sf. the town is and boe are run by progressives that want to force the best schools to be open to kids from the worst neighborhoods rather than suggest that the community around that bad school rally to help support it and improve it. perish the thought!
