The fact that there appears to be no public service campaign on safe walking/street crossing. Growing up in New York City (where they know a thing or two about being aggressive, pedestrian-wise) I remember PSA jingles about crossing at the cross walk, about looking both ways, about being a smart pedestrian. But pedestrians in San Francisco seem to work on the principle that, since it’s not legal to hit them, everyone will be able to stop in time to obey the law. Physics trumps even the best-intentioned driver. I wish my daughter’s school had a Walk Safe program–or even just a jingle they could sing for the kids:
"Teach your eyes to look up!
Teach your ears to hear!
Walk down to the corner
where the coast is clear.
And wait…and wait…and wait until the light turns green."
(NYC PSA, ca. 1960)
