Why is this to only clean up Union Square? It sounds to me like something to impress the "fat cats" that roll through town and only shop/stay at hotels in that part of San Francisco. The whole darn city is gosh darn filthy! Try walking down Townsend Street, then Division Street, and through the Mission District. There is trash strewn everywhere, used hypodermic needles are all over, and ( though this would not be considered "trash" ) I have seen people walking Pit Bull Terriers without leashes. Let me repeat, I have seen people with Pit Bulls that are not on leashes, how frighteningly dangerous is that?
I applaud Gavin’s initiative with this cleaning as I know that he himself would love to see the city completely cleaned up (I read Ross & Matier’s column in the SF Chronicle recently detailing his visit to the Jackson Street playground in Chinatown, where he was appalled at the filth and even started picking up trash himself), as would countless others. So why not think big? How about having as a goal cleaning up the whole city and making the all of the streets clean. Common sense (and, yes, politically) speaking, who could argue against that? Just cleaning up one section of The City will not solve the litter problem long term and smacks of a short term fix/politics. San Franciscans, and those who work here, come to dine, shop, whatever, deserve a lot more than that.
Sincerely,
Mike Timmerman

mike,
have you read anything else in the chronicle lately? gavin is doing this right by proving it can work in one small section of the city so that the progressives will have no wind in their sail when they say he’s crazy to try and stop the rights of the homeless to deficate and shoot up daly in front of our children.
yes i spelled that correctly.
