I made the mistake of taking Powell St in making my way to North Beach yesterday. I quickly remembered why I had stopped taking that route and my pet peeve. It’s difficult to believe that it’s possible to double park cars on a Chinatown street for two hours during the morning commute, every morning. You’d be wrong if you bet against it. Beginning around 6:45 A.M. firefighters coming on duty, illegally, double park their cars on Powell St. They go in, shower, shave and have coffee. After 8:30 A.M., they begin to shift their cars with the firefighters going off duty. Meanwhile, many hundreds of vehicles had to channel their way through one lane on Powell St. Neither the Chief of the Fire Department, DPT, Supervisor Peskin or Mayor Newsom can get them to change their ways OR AT LEAST, SPEED THINGS UP. I know, I asked them.
