Dear Mayor Newsom:
Two things I believe to be important for the city:
First, it seems San Francisco is getting filthier. I am embarrassed by the detritis littering our streets. I can’t imagine the impression the many tourists in SF take back to their homes. Both Chicago and New York are much cleaner than SF. Chinatown is especially horrific. There is a terrible stench on some of the streets, there is trash and filth everywhere and there are clothes hanging from balconies, which is especially unsightly and completely unnecessary. Cigarette butts line every block and not just in Chinatown. It would not be difficult to enforce the fine for littering, add more trash cans, make it illegal to visibly hang clothes and publicize an effort to clean up the city.
Second, I was under the impression that smokers needed to stand 15 feet away from the entrance to a building. I do not appreciate walking through a haze of cigarette smoke to enter an establishment, be it my place of employment or a bar or restaurant. I am assaulted daily with the unhealthy stench of cigarette smoke. For those of us who are allergic, or just plain hate it, please enforce this law. If I am mistaken about it being a law, then please make it one for the health of those who don’t suffer from this filthy habit.
Thank you for your time.
Holly
