Day after day you see sidewalks and streets cluttered with printed advertisements that have been put on door knobs, posts, and fences. The major culprit seems to be restaurants with "to go" menus, but many other businesses leave unwanted and unsolicited junk mail on a regular basis.
The City should create an Opt-Out register for this kind of advertising. Anyone who does not want to receive this kind of marketing can sign up — ideally at no cost online. Businesses would be required to obtain the addresses of all residents who do not want to bothered with this junk mail. Any advertiser who leaves unwanted junk mail would be fined. If enough fines are issued, that advertiser would be prohibited from leaving junk mail at all. The administering City department would be self-funded through the collection of fines.
