My pet peeve is about the people who go through the recycling cans before the trash is picked up by Sunset Scavengers. I thought that our great City was known for recycling and that WE make money on the recycled products. The Taraval Police station refuses to do anything because it is a "municipal" matter. So, Mayor Newsom, who would handle that? I don’t appreciate strangers going through my trash when it is against the law. How do I know that those people going through the garbage aren’t into identity theft? As a home owner who has paid taxes for 14 years, I would like to see something done about this. I know that it takes place in many areas of the City. Thanks for your time.

I absolutely agree. I learned years ago that no one from Taraval will respond.
The people don’t just go for the recycling - they go through the garbage and compost bins also. It is not uncommon to find trash all over the street from cans left out the night before. Our garbage day is Monday. They start coming around 3:00pm on Sunday and people keep coming until the cans are picked up Monday morning. We don’t put our cans out until about 6:30am on pick up day. More often than not the aluminum cans are gone from the recycle bin by the time the truck arrives usually around 8:00am.
Now they even come up the alleyway to get what they think is rightfully theirs. We keep our cans at the back of the alley. Twice last month I caught people in the alley going through the cans. When told to leave they wanted to take what they had stolen with them. Another guy had gone through all the bins and had a little pile of things from all three ready to put in his cart which he had pushed up the alley. When I came out the side door he was looking in the window of the house next door. When I threatened to call the cops he said “no cops” and grinned and shook his head. He knew they wouldn’t come!
Some of these people are disadvantaged but many are not. There is a local couple, both are employed at a local utility company, who brag that pay a big portion of their mortage from what they get scrounging the local recycling bins - that is how they afford the boat and trips to Italy. One guy who regularly goes through the neighborhood cans lives nearby and has a good job as a house painter. I see him at Safeway - he buys steak while I’m buying chicken on sale.
Look on the City’s web site and it says if you see people taking stuff from your recycle bins to call the police. Yeah - right.
