Mayor Newsom,
Your townhall meetings (and this section of your campaign website) are full of MUNI horror stories and pleas to fix the system. No doubt, you are aware of the problem. As someone who wants to leave my car at home and commute to work via MUNI and arrive on-time, I’m interested in solutions–specifically your ideas about
how to fix this system.
I moved to Cole Valley less than a year ago and try to ride the N Line downtown and back everyday.
As one of the busiest stops (and growing) on the N Line, the service levels are unacceptable and make me want to get back into my car. Fortunately, I have that choice–many transit dependent riders are trapped in this N Judah nightmare.
On Saturday, it took me almost one hour to travel between Carl and Cole and Civic Center. I had plenty of time to think while sitting in the Muni tunnels about the city I live in and its priorities. San Francisco and its elected representatives tout San Francisco as a worldly class city–and yes, it has many great attributes, but it will never be a first rate city until it has a first rate transit system.
You have made reducing carbon emissions or greenhouse gases a priority for the city. You will never achieve this vision and get people out of their cars if the alternative is the unreliable level of service Muni is providing today.
This is my first communication with your office/campaign. I am aware of the upcoming MUNI/Parking ballot initiative that would steer an additional $26M toward Muni annually. This is a good start, but merely a band-aid. I want to know what you, who will soon be asking for my vote, will do to specifically fix the N Line frequency and unreliability problems and the MUNI light rail and bus system in general. Where is your leadership and vision on this and if re-elected, what will you specifically do?
I look forward to your detailed response.
Thank you,
Jennifer
