When will the mayor do something about the law-breaking bikers who ride their bikes on the sidewalk? Why is that tolerated here? I have NEVER seen a bicyclist riding past me that has ever announced that he is there, like I have seen in other cities, by saying "On your left/right." Usually, the biker speeds past me as I feel their clothes whipping me–barely avoiding a near-accident if I had taken one small step to the left. If that person was walking behind me, would they just shove me out of the way?
I’ve also been almost mowed down several times by cyclists (esp. in the Financial District!) ignoring the traffic rules and not yielding to pedestrians–which I DO see cars doing. It’s the arrogance of the bikers and no police intervention that allows this kind of dangerous behavior to continue.
That Critical Mass is allowed to continue despite inconveniencing not just so-called "lazy" car drivers, but people who have to drive (like the disabled and elderly) and the majority of public transportation riders, is shocking. It makes me want to vote against Newsom, who allows this law-breaking to happen every single month. This does NOT make the city great–it fuels the arrogance of a group of self-serving jerks who want to get out their aggression and to be "cool hipsters" because they look like they’re protesting a cause. My message to these lemmings is to actually do some real community service in this city with people who need it instead of holding the city hostage every month with your self-serving show of "protest." It does nothing to promote more bike lanes in this city–it succeeds in making most people hate bike riders.
