Cyclists that do not obey traffic laws, traffic signals, and common rules of the road courtesy. Even though I cannot ride a bike for errands, etc, due to my age and disabilities, I am very much in favor of that mode of transportation for those who can do it. It would certainly help our city’s pollution problems, while benefiting the health of the rider. However, one of my greatest fears as a motorist is hitting a cyclist. I would be devastated to injure anyone. I am very careful when I see someone on a bike anywhere near me. I think that cyclist would be much safer on the streets (and motorists would be less likely to run into one) if they were required to obeyed all of the same driving rules and laws that we must practice. It is just as aggravating to me to sit at a red light (when there is very obviously no one coming from any direction) as it is for a cyclist, but I wouldn’t dream of rushing through a red light just because I can’t see any cars coming! I can only recall ONE time that I witnessed some one on a bike actually wait for the light to turn green. Their usual MO is to weave back and forth until the coast looks clear, then make a dash for it. And just forget about Stop Signs … it’s as though they are not even meant for bikers! Also, you can never be sure which side of you car they are going to try to pass on. I could go on and on about driving infractions I have seen. Maybe cyclists would be more respectful of the law if they were issued tickets, just like motorists, but I have never seen that happen. All bike riders who drive on city streets should have to get a "bike drivers license" and register their bikes, the same as motorists, and then be held accountable for the rules of the road. Maybe more law-abiding, respectful cyclists would result in more motorists appreciating cyclists and the service they do our community by using self-generated energy to transport themselves!
