Mayor Newsom, the following information on drunk driving and negligent bars comes from Join Together, an alcohol and drug addiction policy organization:
Suspected drunk-drivers are being quizzed by New Jersey police about where they had their last drink as part of an effort to identify bars that may be habitually over serving customers, the New York Times reported Dec. 30.
The "last drink" initiative, instituted by the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control, gathers information from police officers in a statewide database; regulators then use the information to better target investigations by state alcohol inspectors.

I often spend as much time driving around looking for parking as I do driving to my destination. If people could drive straight to a parking garage near where they are going it would cut pollution in half. Not to mention make it a lot less frustrating to live or visit SF, and enhance local businesses near the garages.

It would be nice to shop until 10pm on weekdays and 11 on weekends and perhaps it would open up more jobs.

There is unrestrained over development along the Embarcadero the Ferry Building neighborhood which seems unplanned and unsupervised. Where is the urban planning and oversight of deed restrictions, protection of open air, green and recreation facilities for this important area?

I know that it is at time frustrating to deal with tourists, but they are very very very important to our City and I would like them to enjoy their time and come back with friends. My pet peeve are Cable Car operators who are often very curt and at times rude to tourists. I don't know of anyone to come to SF and miss a Cable Car ride - even people on business trips make time for a Cable Car ride. The Cable Car operators are ambassadors for this City because every visitor will come in contact with them. Read This Posty »

Has anybody done a thorough review of whether or not they benefit our local economy or if, in fact, they are a drain on local business. I propose we let them leave. Let's create instead an inter-urban league of sports teams - our city boosters cannot argue that a truly local sports team would not benefit the image of the city and capture the intangible benefits of having a local team. We shouldn't bend over backward to keep a sport cartel satiated and glutted on public tax benefits.

I am glad that you Gavin, are trying to do something about our SF HC System. But please stop letting all of the non-union businesses into our City that has a long history of being a Union town. We need our Unions, we need to support our working people in SF. God knows there are so few left due to the high prices of housing in SF. I am so glad that I can live here but only because I bought my house so long ago. STOP UNION BUSTING we are in a crisis here. Let's problem solve instead of Read This Posty »

Irresponsible politicians who make promises they can not keep, such as "Universal Health Care" which will imperil the tax base and drive down home values in the City. How are you going to Soak the Rich after they all move away?

I just saw a movie "War" that is supposedly set in San Francisco. The entire production was shot in Vancouver, Canada. I am a local actress and a member of SAG. What are we doing about bringing film and TV production back to the San Francisco Bay Area. There were at least 500 production people, extras, actors, etc., employed on this film. We need our work back here. What can we do to make it more affordable to bring these companies back to the Bay Area? This is some serious $$$ we are losing as a community.

Having just read Mr. Nevius' latest column, I'm left wondering if he truly understands our great city. Gavin Newsom's high poll numbers are
not an aberration, and are not, as Tony Hall would have us believe, "fake." Why is it that people decide certain polls must not be correct
when they do not want to believe in the results?
The vast majority of San Franciscans believe Mr. Newsom has been a good mayor, and deserves to be re-elected for another four years. He is young, dynamic and exactly what our city needs to continue moving forward.
As a long-time resident who is highly pro-development, Read This Posty »

Will someone please let the Mayor know that strong supporters like myself are getting discouraged with the the latest "quality of life issues" that the Mayor is proposing such as the elimination of garbage cans. It is my habit to pick up trash as I walk along the city streets, for sometime now I had to carry the trash for over SIX blocks or more to finally dispose of it. Please, Please this is not the answer to keeping garbage that small businesses place in the garbage cans when they close at night. Also, as far as curtailing MUNI STOPS Read This Posty »

I live in South Beach--industrial turned residential neighborhood. Unfortunately, when it came time to schedule trash pick-ups, we got the very early mornings and very late nights (oftentimes BOTH). I'm fairly certain this evolved from being an industrial/deserted neighborhood where it really didn't matter. Anyway, at my apartment on Colin P Kelly the sounds of the trash pick-ups on Townsend come echoing up every night between 8pm (when we're lucky) and 10:30 or 11pm. I know the back-up signals are necessary, but the majority of the noise comes from the loud banging of the metal lids on the dumpsters as Read This Posty »

It is far from solved. I work in the Financial District and every other corner has a homeless person or beggar. This is ridiculous. How can you promote business and tourism if there are homeless sleeping and begging in front of the former Pacific Stock Exchange. I will not vote for you until you follow through. Why don't you walk through the district any morning. You'll see what I mean.

In the Union Square area in particular, one of the top two tourist areas in the city, one can't walk half a block without being approached/harassed by vagrants looking for spare change. On Powell St this past Tuesday I counted 23 of them between Market St. and the St. Francis Hotel. It is a disgrace and is at epidemic proportions. The filth they leave in their wake is appalling. I am a democrat and voted for you. I think you are doing a pretty good job and you seem like a decent guy. Next time out, I am voting for Read This Posty »

Mayor Newsom,
My biggest problem is that while you have created more jobs in S.F., it has caused a mass exodus of families with school age children because this city has one of the highest median home costs in California. Most of your middle-class families cannot afford to live here and educate their children here. San Francisco is not a educationally competitive city. I would not be a bit surprise that there are more pets in this city than there are children. Is this truly the direction that we want to go in, making this city devoid of children? There also Read This Posty »

The parks in the city are in badly need of repair...filling in the holes in ball playing fields, old swimming pools and changing facilities, antiquated buildings, and lots of garbage. Since our tax dollars go to support so many worthy and higher priority causes, why not seek local corporate support to fix some of these facilities?
We wouldn't have to rename the parks after these companies but we could give them credit and signage. Especially for capital investments in facilities.
A world class city deserves better!

The fact that the best afterschool program in the city is being run into the ground and no one in city government will lift a finger to help. Tule Elk Park Child Development Center has had funding cut for the last few years. This is the famous CDC that transformed their asphalt "playground" into a lovely garden and park, added an environmental educator and enhanced their art program. It's the crown jewel of the city and now faces cuts that threaten the very programs that parents, educators, local merchants and benefactors helped put together. It is clear evidence that this Read This Posty »
