After C. W. Nevius's article in the Chronicle about the homeless advocates once again mobilizing to block enforcement of laws on living in the Park, I officially give up all hope that the "homeless" problem will ever end. So it's goodbye Main Public Library, goodbye Golden Gate Park, goodbye a major stretch of Market Street (from Powell to Octavia), goodbye to much of Van Ness, goodbye Civic Center. All of these areas are no longer for the majority of the population. They are for the homeless to do whatever they please in.
I would just remind people of the photographs Read This Posty »

I try to ride a bicycle as much as possible, the condition of the city streets and the roadways in Golden Gate Park are dangerous. The route I frequent, along Stanyan Street, is a total washboard and entails using only the middle of the road , to avoid the washboard edges, which makes for bad interaction with motorists. Take a look at Stanyan Street from Parnassus to Frederick; or look at almost any road in Golden Gate Park for examples. Only the part of JFK Drive between Stanyan and 19th Ave. has any decent pavement.

Every year those of us living on Fulton St. have nowhere to park for three days. This is becoming a major inconvenience... I work at SFGH on the weekends, get up at 5:00 a.m. and come home at 4:00; cars are parked bumper-to-bumper for blocks as well as the
traffic along Fulton St. There is nowhere to park until 8:00 p.m., so no way to return home until then.
Bringing this to Supervisor McGoldrick's attention last year did zilch as a response, and it was ignored. MOVE THE CONCERTS, EVENTS, ETC. TO ANOTHER PART OF THE PARK and have some Read This Posty »

I have lived at the corner of Bartlett and Cesar Chavez for 3 years. Every day, 10-15 men sit on the corner, litter, get drunk, sell drugs, and urinate.
The Board of Supervisors almost did not approve a development across the street which has been abandoned for over 1 year.
The DPW comes by and routinely picks up couches, chairs, and miscellaneous trash when called. They do a terrific job but my pet peeve is;
Why does San Francisco never address the cause and spend so much money addressing the result? I know it is political but downtown and high profile (Golden Gate Read This Posty »

The homeless are citizens and have rights like everybody. But, like the rest of us, the homeless should act responsibly and respect our laws. There is no excuse whatsover to throw needles in children's sandboxes, endangering our children. Golden Gate Park is a PUBLIC park for everybody, not the private campsite for the homeless. The truth of the matter is there are resources out there where the homeless CAN receive help if they only CHOOSE to receive help. The people of San Francisco should no longer put up with all this nonsense.

Who does the planning here or is some crazy random pattern? Take 14th Ave between Anza/Balboa. There was little or nothing wrong on that block (never cut into for major work in years - or minor for that matter), yet it got paved over in a couple of days. Yes, nice, but 14th between Balboa/Cabrillo is like some of the worst parts of Golden Gate Park and hasn't been touched in more than twenty years. I know there's some plan, but from my POV it looks too random and is missing the major infrastructure points and just when it looks Read This Posty »

I'd love to see gg park 'cleaned up', but it would also be nice if there were enough options as far as shelters for the homeless so they wouldn't have to resort to camping in the park.
Btw, what's up with the city-wide high-speed wireless...let's get it done!

I think it is patently ludicrous to place the blame solely on Mayor Gavin Newsom for the state of Golden Gate Park. No matter what solutions the mayor or anyone else is city government will come up are for naught because of the outcries of the so-called "homeless advocates" every time a potential idea is raised.
This city has let tolerance and liberalism with regard to the homeless problem get out of control. These self-proclaimed advocates for the homeless actually believe, and have stated as such, that people have a right to be homeless, and should be able to set up Read This Posty »

I guess it was inevitable despite our efforts to keep the bums out of our neighborhood, there is one now regularly sleeping in front of our building. I called the Police General Dispatch and got a self-righteous little jerk (Dispatcher 80, I believe) who began to lecture me that homelessness is not a crime. Yeah, like I was calling because the person is homeless. No, I was calling because the person trashes the front of our building and uses the back for a toilet. But that didn't matter to this dispatcher as he was well versed in the lies-designed-to-shame-critics crafted Read This Posty »

Dear C.W.,
Your article this morning featuring the homeless camps in our beautiful Golden Gate Park was right on the mark. The Mayor's last sweep did make a difference to those of us who live near the park (Haight Ashbury). The scores of homeless who mine Haight street for money by day, retreat to these camps by night to use drugs and alcohol and warm by fires. The sweep helped end this cycle for a few months. Sadly they re-establish camps quickly. The Mayor has not done another sweep since. It needs to be Read This Posty »

Will someone please let the Mayor know that strong supporters like myself are getting discouraged with the the latest "quality of life issues" that the Mayor is proposing such as the elimination of garbage cans. It is my habit to pick up trash as I walk along the city streets, for sometime now I had to carry the trash for over SIX blocks or more to finally dispose of it. Please, Please this is not the answer to keeping garbage that small businesses place in the garbage cans when they close at night. Also, as far as curtailing MUNI STOPS Read This Posty »

People coming out of Golden Gate Park northbound on 30th Avenue turn right on red onto eastbound Fulton and either cut cars off or get hit. I strongly suggest making it "no turn on red!"

JFK - west of crossover - is in terrible condition. Bicylists are forced to ride near the center of the road in stretches to avoid multiple potholes. Some motorists understand this but some don't. East of crossover has been repaved, but the temporary lines for the bicycle lane - applied months ago - have faded and are nearly gone. When are the permanent lines going to be painted? When will the city start taking care of roads?

Outer Sunset issues: (the county) Fix the pot holes and repave the west end of Golden Gate Park and I'll consider supporting you for re-election.

I am off work for 1 week and have spent time at home for the first time in ages. Many walks through Golden Gate Park. One thing that I have noticed on a very regular basis. We are supposed to be a "Green" city, which I would think would include water conservation. Most sprinklers are going strong and simply watering the street. Can these sprinklers not be watched and adjusted to water the plants and grass. It is a shameful waste.

It is so bad and so incredibly blatant in what is basically a nice neighborhood and a nice park.

Why can't something be done about underage drinking like I saw today in Golden Gate Park after and during Bay to Breakers. 21 means 21! By the way it is unlawful to have beers or any thing else like that in the park, if the signs mean anything!

My poor little poodle has been attacked several times by pit bulls on Haight Street and in GG Park and I have been knocked over once in the park. They should be forbidden.

I run in Golden Gate Park regularly and several times a year I see people driving the wrong way on the one way street around the west end of Stow Lake. I think that a big DO NOT ENTER YOU'RE GOING THE WRONG WAY sign near the boat house parking lot would probably be a good idea.
