Homeless advocates blocking enforcement of laws
November 29th, 2007 9:26 am

After C. W. Nevius's article in the Chronicle about the homeless advocates once again mobilizing to block enforcement of laws on living in the Park, I officially give up all hope that the "homeless" problem will ever end. So it's goodbye Main Public Library, goodbye Golden Gate Park, goodbye a major stretch of Market Street (from Powell to Octavia), goodbye to much of Van Ness, goodbye Civic Center. All of these areas are no longer for the majority of the population. They are for the homeless to do whatever they please in. I would just remind people of the photographs Read This Posty »

Since the police don’t care, maybe you’ll show some interest
November 6th, 2007 2:28 pm

My wife's car was broken into in the parking lot at the Pottery Barn at Market and Castro three hours ago.  She's still waiting for the police to come and take a report.   I know the police are busy putting up "Yes on F" signs, but we live in the city and pay our taxes.  Somebody needs to step up and take responsibility for the criminals which this city fosters in it's low income housing.   Mike Read This Posty »

What about some jail time for those who are not mentally ill?
October 30th, 2007 11:31 am

Now that there is pressure on vagrants in some parts of the City, they are moving back onto the 1500 block of Market street. Any given morning there are at least 5 and usually as many as 10 or more people camping and drinking and drunk in that block by 8:00 in the morning. Another part of why they keep appearing there is because there is a store in that block that sells liquor very early in the morning and also allows them to keep their shopping carts in their store - so that they can continue to cynically take Read This Posty »

Trim the trees on Market St.
October 29th, 2007 10:57 am

Not a peeve but a suggestion.  Market Street trees below Van Ness look tired and scraggly. I suggest that you trim them like the California Street trees so that they gain some thickness and body. Name Withheld Read This Posty »

What is happening to San Francisco?
October 22nd, 2007 8:15 am

My husband, our 15 year old twins and I visited San Francisco 2 weeks ago.  This is my fourth trip to the city since 1984.  It is truly one of my favourite cities in the world.  However, I was very upset to discover what I observed as deterioration of the downtown core.  The homlessness zones are spreading, it is a much less pleasurable downtown to walk in and the abandonment of historical buildings is heartbreaking.  We were walking back to our hotel late one night down Mission street past the old mint.  My daughter exclaimed, " Mom what is that Read This Posty »

Traffic design in the city
October 19th, 2007 8:20 am

(1) Three lanes instead of four around the curve in front of Park police station. (2) Inadequate bicycle lanes in downtown. (3) Right-turn conflicts with pedestrians at Market & Van Ness. Fred Merrick Read This Posty »

Guiliani cleaned Manhattan up with a strengthened police force
October 15th, 2007 7:47 am

Mr. Newsom, You need to be much more proactive in preventing crime and homeless solicitations in SOMA, the Tendorloin & Market Street. Numerous visitors & friends of mine have commented on how "ugly & nasty the problem is" specifically in high traffic tourist areas. I lived in NYC when Mayor Guiliani was in office and he cleaned all of Manhattan up with a strengthened police force, you definitely need to do the same from 6th street to 2nd Street, Market to Brannan. This starts with simply having a police presence and the rest will take care of itself. ~Thanks, Jonathan Goodman Read This Posty »

How about getting the cracks in city streets fixed
October 12th, 2007 9:05 am

A crack, hole, or rise in the surface of our streets of less than an inch or greater may sound like small potatoes to you, but try traveling between California and Market streets (including the sidewalks) in a standard or power wheelchair. It can be a jarring experience, not to mention the wear and tear on the chair. If you think I'm kidding, you are welcome to try the trip yourself. Just borrow a chair and do it. As a matter of fact, I am more than willing to let you borrow my powerchair.   Also, what Read This Posty »

Close the Community Recyling Centers
October 8th, 2007 10:26 am

I'm reaching a point of being completely fed up about a quality-of-life issue that never seems to be addressed. I firmly believe that the recycling center on the Market St. Safeway property has become a public nuisance and should be closed.  Since we now have curbside recycling from every SF household, the only purpose the Community Recyclers facility serves is to create an "industry" of theft, where homeless people go through peoples' recycling bins, stealing recyclables and strewing trash all over the street, so that they can sell the recyclables at the recycling center. This is NOT a victimless crime.  My neighbors Read This Posty »

I can’t imagine why we stay at the top of the most visited cities
September 27th, 2007 7:32 am

I am tired of the smell of urine in so many places - garages, parking lots, and most especially, Market Street.  I can't imagine why we stay at the top of the most visited cities.  If I were a tourist, I am not sure I would return. Name Withheld Read This Posty »

Ashamed of Powell Street between Union Square and Market
September 21st, 2007 8:10 am

Dear Mayor Newsom, As a long-time resident of San Francisco, having grown up in this fair city I take great pride in being able to say I am from here, albeit not native as I moved here when I was six-years-old. Now, 31 years later, I'm glad to see my city back on track in terms of tourism. I've noticed many European tourists especially and was even told by an SFPD airport officer that foreign travel is back to pre-9/11.   The unfortunate thing, and the reason for my letter, is I am ashamed to see the condition of Powell Street between Read This Posty »

Panhandling on Powell St.
September 21st, 2007 7:25 am

My pet peeve is that I sent an email regarding Powell Street from Union Sq. to Market and all the aggressive panhandling and the filth of the street to your office on August 29 and received no response. Not even an auto-reply saying you received the letter. Name Withheld Read This Posty »

I’m a biker and support all non-oil burning forms of transportation
September 17th, 2007 7:18 am

I understand some people need to drive, but private vehicles and buses that run red lights should be ticketed. I have almost been hit several times and one of those times a police car was at the intersection of Market and Hayes and did not do a thing. Please ensure that our laws are enforced for our own safety - especially for those of us trying to save our world for the next generations and have no chance of survival against 2 tons of steel.  Thank you! -Jen Read This Posty »

A lovely Welcome to SF!
September 10th, 2007 8:35 am

The new green newspaper bins are great except when they allow for people to use the sides of them as urinals. This is occurring every day on the corner of 7th/Market St. (check cashing store corner).  A guy can stand in between the two Green Bins which allows them to pee w/o being exposed. There is so much urine that it cascades out right in front of the Bart/Muni stairs to go underground. Such a lovely Welcome to SF!?!? Terry Clark Read This Posty »

Drugs and Homless on Powell and Market
August 20th, 2007 9:57 am

My pet peeve is writing to the Mayor's office a few times about the drugs and homeless situation along the Powell/Market street area and getting no response at all.  As of right now, Mr. Newsom does NOT have my vote. Name Withheld Read This Posty »

Once again, SFPD is apathetic towards the concerns of law abiding citizens
July 24th, 2007 7:07 am

Watching TV peacefully in my living room this evening, I'm disturbed by yelling and screaming outside my window.  Granted I live @ Market and Powell Streets, but this confrontation was so unusually loud and heated, it drew me to the window. I see four people screaming and yelling at each other emphatically waving their arms, getting in each others faces.  In short, I see an argument - an argument that could easily escalate into a physical confrontation - or worse. I call SFPD non emergency.  I give descriptions of all four, I tell them about the confrontation and ask them to send Read This Posty »

Not Enough Cans at 7th St. between Mission & Market Streets
July 18th, 2007 9:13 am

Instead of less garbage cans, we need more in certain downtown areas, such as 7th Street between Mission & Market Streets.  There are none at all and there is always bottles and paper in the street and sidewalk. Name Withheld Read This Posty »

Homeless at Hallidie Plaza
July 13th, 2007 7:38 pm

I'm sitting here looking out my apartment window at the gang of 5 or 6 homeless who have made camp in Hallidie Plaza by the Powell St. BART station.  They're there when I go to work, when I go to school, when I go to dinner, when I go to catch a train, when I come home from work, when I come home from school, when I look out my window. Their bags and garbage and guitars and skateboards strewn about the plaza.  Their litter blowing all over the place in the wind.  I see people shooting up in the plaza, Read This Posty »
