Homelessness and Panhandling - is still the greatest challenge
April 6th, 2007 12:47 pm

It's a disgrace for the city - and at least I feel ashamed for San Francisco when other nationalities and also other areas of the USA have a reason to point fingers, with regards to this still ongoing situation here in the city. Look for solutions that the Europeans - specifically Germany - have proven as effective.  Get the homeless and panhandlers off the streets.  It is possible!  Perhaps give them "community social" work to do in turn for housing.  We do have enough vacancies in the city!  Don't create housing ghetto - spread them out throughout the city - Read This Posty »

The homeless in the city are a complete disgrace
April 5th, 2007 8:38 pm

I live in the "TenderNob" and see anywhere from 50-70 homeless people PER DAY.  I pay $1,000/month to be accosted everyday, to smell and step over urine and feces, see men expose themselves, walk around people sleeping on the street, etc.  I see people making drug deals, smoking crack, and shooting up.  I see the  tourists and their children being asked for money.  When I go to Chicago, there are noticably less homeless people there.  It really makes a difference on stress levels of people who live/work in SF.  I don't care how you do it, but please get these Read This Posty »

Homlessness, drugs, crime and just all around dirty streets
April 5th, 2007 8:26 pm

All of these issues can be helped by just making the streets a lot cleaner.  Hire the homless to pick up trash if you will, get more police on foot on the street (this creates quite a presence, much more than driving by in cars).  We also need to tell everyone, especially tourists, not to give money to the homeless (they can give money to a charity instead).  We really need to look to other cities on how they have solved these problems.  With a clean city there is proven to be less crime.  It is as easy as picking Read This Posty »

Racial Politics
April 3rd, 2007 8:32 pm

I am tired of the racial politics in this city, I am tired of the large amounts of homeless and panhandlers in the city, and I am frightened that when I called 911 it took five minutes to get anyone on the phone. I would like to see more action and less political correctness from the police. Michael Read This Posty »

DIRTY CITY BY THE BAY
April 3rd, 2007 2:34 pm

My Pet Peeve:  Allowing the Behaviors that Create this "DIRTY CITY BY THE BAY"   We've been blessed with one of the most beautiful and unique cities in the country - a historical gift to our residents and to tourists from all over the world.   But I am deeply ashamed that we've allowed this natural and man-made beauty to become so filthy:   Trash, human urine and feces litter our streets.  Homeless sleep on our sidewalks and doorways and leave behind all kinds of crap (figuratively and literally).  Panhandlers are rampant, aggressive, and allowed to dangerously "work" stopped traffic in the middle of busy streets Read This Posty »

The homeless
April 3rd, 2007 2:16 pm

I'm sick and tired of the filth, garbage, human waste, and aggressive panhandling in neighborhoods like the Mission and around Market Street courtesy of the legions of homeless  in this city.  There's nothing like starting your morning by walking around the corner to witness another human being taking a crap on the sidewalk.  Why is this such a huge issue in San Francisco and why is it such a herculean task create any sort of positive change in this area? Maybe it's the mild climate, the socially tolerant attitude, or perhaps the tendency of local government to turn a blind Read This Posty »

Unreliable Muni, Unsupervised Teens and Sleeping Homeless Folks
April 3rd, 2007 2:12 pm

1.  Unreliable Muni Metro service on weekday rush hour times.  Why is it that when there are the most people waiting for a train, the system runs only one-car (as opposed to two-car) trains?  It's also frustrating to me that the "No food or drink" rule on Muni is pretty much universally ignored.  I've never seen it enforced, nor have I ever seen a bus driver confront a fare evader who boards from the back door.  I'm sure that the drivers see a lot and endure a lot, but if the public is given the idea that the rules don't Read This Posty »

CLEAN UP!
April 1st, 2007 5:31 pm

For a "world class city", San Francisco is filthy and disgusting.  Crack smoking, drunkeness, people bugging me for change ALL THE TIME... makes me wonder why I pay so much to live here.  CLEAN UP! Name Withheld Read This Posty »

Criminalize Homelessness?
April 1st, 2007 5:24 pm

First, I want to commend Mayor Newsom, I think he is doing a great job and I look forward to his re-election. My latest pet peeve are street people probably more than half are homeless.  Constant harassment for money and if they don't give money they assault you verbally. I am certain in minimal check into anyone of those people's background would produce some type of criminal record. But, for every attempt to do something constructive about the problem other than hand outs are always criticize by the local media.  It seems odd how the local media always manages to Read This Posty »

Homeless “Hold Court”
April 1st, 2007 5:01 pm

Mayor Newsom: why are the homeless allowed to "hold court" on the sidewalks of downtown San Francisco and harass passersby for money? This situation has  jumped from the pot to the skillet!!! It seems that the bums are getting very self-righteous and view those of us that work as human ATM's. It amazes me that they are allowed to follow and swear at people that don't give them money over their hogwash sob stories. When is it gonna end, Mayor Newsom? I am a hardworking native of this city who feels threatened whenever I exit the Powell Street BART station. Read This Posty »

Parking and Plays
April 1st, 2007 4:38 pm

When I come there on business and need to park for an hour, and there are no long term meters. When I come there from San Jose to see a play, and I am approached in an intersection by homeless people begging for money. Steven Ward Read This Posty »

Aggressive and Threatening Panhandling
April 1st, 2007 4:00 pm

I love going to dinner in the city, but won't take friends and family due to the aggressive and threatening pan handlers. The city business and owners and customers are all suffering, something needs to be done, are you the Mayor to make San Francisco the great city it could be? I hope so! SF has a long way to go
April 1st, 2007 3:44 pm

I moved here about 2 1/2 years ago and I must say I love this city and do not plan to leave. Mayor Newson has been a great Mayor, but from living in cities like Ft. Lauderdale, Chicago and visiting cities like Miami, and New York, San Francisco has got a long way to go. 1) Muni- I have to say that this cities public transit system is the worst I have ever seen. Nashville Tennessee has a more effiicient system. Mayor Newsom, send some people to New york and Chicago and take a few notes on how to stop illegal Read This Posty »

Take a homeless person to Marin
April 1st, 2007 3:39 pm

I want to say homelessness, but what really is my issue is panhandling. As a resident near the van ness corridor, I encounter at least one panhandler per block I walk each and every day. It is ridiculous. And for all the homeless advocates, I'd like them to get OUT of their cars and walk this city day in and day out like some of the rest of us. If you don't have to deal with it, you shouldn't be telling those of us that do how to deal  with it.  I fail to understand how they can force their Read This Posty »

Hard to be proud of Market street…
April 1st, 2007 3:17 pm

There is a recycling center located at the corner of Market street and Dubose. Every day hoards of homeless with shopping carts trudge past our neighborhood, often spilling their bottles in front of the house. I understand the need for a recycling center but don't know why it needs to be located on Market street. My friends and I are weary of being hounded for change and smokes every time we leave our houses. it's nearly impossible to have a quiet moment sitting outside of our local cafe, just because so many people use Market street to transport their cans Read This Posty »

NYC cleaned up their downtown areas, why can’t we?
April 1st, 2007 3:04 pm

The filthy streets and garbage everyhere
April 1st, 2007 2:05 pm

I am a native San Franciscan and have lived in the Sunset District most of my life.  It has changed so much in the past years.  The merchants on Taraval Street should keep their property in front of their businesses clean and free of debris.   The homeless is another issue.  West Portal and Taraval Street are full of them.  They sleep by the library and in the driveways of private residences. Should this be allowed? They are allowed on Muni to panhandle. Barbara Paganini Read This Posty »

Here are some ideas that will make San Francisco a better place to live
March 29th, 2007 3:40 pm

Trees: Plant more trees; require every home and apartment to have at least one street tree Illegal units: Crack down on illegal units; fine the owners; prevent residential use of units that are not up-to-code Parking: Enforce no-parking-on-sidewalk rules; give property owners tax incentives to keep front yards unpaved Muni Metro: Have more trains and use two cars; trains are too crowded morning and evening and not frequent enough in off hours; do not lower fares ñ that will just encourage the homeless to ride; fewer people would drive if the trains were not so unpleasant; bus lane on Geary is smart, underground Read This Posty »

Panhandling Everywhere
