Homeless advocates blocking enforcement of laws
November 29th, 2007 9:26 am

After C. W. Nevius's article in the Chronicle about the homeless advocates once again mobilizing to block enforcement of laws on living in the Park, I officially give up all hope that the "homeless" problem will ever end. So it's goodbye Main Public Library, goodbye Golden Gate Park, goodbye a major stretch of Market Street (from Powell to Octavia), goodbye to much of Van Ness, goodbye Civic Center. All of these areas are no longer for the majority of the population. They are for the homeless to do whatever they please in. I would just remind people of the photographs Read This Posty »

Smokers on the beach
October 25th, 2007 1:13 pm

Smoking is supposed to be illegal on the beaches and in the parks, but I see dozens of people smoking everyday, then throwing their burning butts on the ground.  Can't we at least have signs up that explain you cannot smoke?  How about having the beach and park rangers enforce the law?  Getting rid of cigarettes is good for all of us, including Planet Earth. Sharing Recreation Space with Cars
October 8th, 2007 10:29 am

The total disregard to the well-being of the students at Robt. Louis Stephenson Elementary School by having to share their recreation space with the car of the administrator who parks on their play area...disgusting... Name Withheld Read This Posty »

Using public school grounds for public use on weekends
October 8th, 2007 10:20 am

This is my pet peeve, because the research conducted prior to rolling out this initiative was not thoroughly done. The logistics of knowing who/what/when and where is not provided prior to announcing it. As a result, it has placed many San Franciscan parents of public schools in a defensive mode rather than a cooperative mode to work with the mayor on these types of initiatives. I respect what he's trying to accomplish/achieve as result of some of the unfortunate incidents that have occurred in certain districts. But to come out with an initiative without doing the homework is irresponsible and Read This Posty »

“Homeless” advocates usually have the process backwards
September 12th, 2007 11:07 am

The broken windows theory outlined below is exactly why I ask people to stay on top of new encampments of drunks and junkies as they appear in neighborhoods. Market Street west of Van Ness is a perfect example of an area that such people are trying to take over. That is why I call the police every time I pass a drunk passed out on the sidewalk or trying to set up a camp or just sitting getting drunk making rude comments to passersby. I hope everyone is doing this also. And once again, I would like to say that Read This Posty »

South Park Mess
August 21st, 2007 10:30 am

On Saturday I took our 2 year old twins to South Park.  Unfortunately, nothing has changed, so we left after 15 minutes.    Two guys were sitting on the bench by the climbing structures, drinking 40 ounce beers.  Another collection of homeless/ vagrants at the 3rd street end of the park- shopping carts, etc double parked into the street.   No sun because the trees are still overgrown.  Slide has hole in it...etc, etc, etc.   Hopefully South Park is on the list for renovation under the new Bond issue...... Graffiti, littering of all sorts, and pointless destruction of structures
August 20th, 2007 9:30 am

It's hard to pick one and only one, but I suppose my pet peeve encompasses graffiti, littering of all sorts, and pointless destruction of structures meant for everyone's use and pleasure, such as bus shelters, benches, and public plantings.  If only there were sufficient police and park rangers to safeguard our lovely city and keep it from sliding into one vast, unflushed toilet.  The bad guys are definitely winning this round.  I'd gladly pay more taxes just to get the city cleaned up and keep it that way. No Bathrooms in Michaelangelo Park
August 9th, 2007 2:47 pm

There are no bathrooms at Michaelangelo Park. It is the closest park to Yick Wo Elementary (a National Blue Ribbon School). There are many groups of students who frequent the park after school on a daily basis, yet there is nowhere for our children (or us) to go to the bathroom. To be honest, we have all resorted to going in the back corner of the park (fondly referred to as "the pee corner"). We would love to have a bathroom for our children (not to mention ourselves). We would also love to have the water fountain Read This Posty »

Clean Up Ferry Plaza Park
August 3rd, 2007 2:29 pm

There is a raised concrete plaza that is part of the San Francisco Park now called Ferry Plaza Park (bounded by Davis, Washington, Drumm and Clay. That raised plaza is a hang-out for skateboarders and homeless persons. During the day, there is frequently a strong smell of marijuana wafting from that section. In the early morning, the smell of human excrement and urine is noticeably strong. Can't that park be policed regularly, and the raised concrete plaza be cleaned routinely? I live in the Golden Gateway Center, and that park is part of my neighborhood. Read This Posty »

Neglected Green Space
August 2nd, 2007 2:27 pm

I live on the 400 block of Funston, and the green space fronting Park Presidio is sadly neglected. Half of the block is never watered because the sprinkler system has been broken for over a year; the other half is overgrown. All complaints to the city have been ignored. Thanks for listening. Enclosed Dog Parks
August 1st, 2007 1:11 am

I wish there was a dog park that was enclosed so that I could let my dog run free and play with other dogs. All of the dog parks are wide open and I fear that he will get hit by a car or jump on a small child. Name Withheld Read This Posty »

Stop Subsidizing a Few Old Men
June 11th, 2007 9:09 am

We have too few gardeners in our parks, while the city's money losing golf courses have 50 full-time gardeners.  We need playing fields for our young people, so let's stop subsidizing a few old men and put those gardeners in the parks where they belong.  Don't privatize the golf courses, give the underserved youth of the city the soccer, baseball, etc. fields they need. Fix the Parks
June 7th, 2007 3:28 pm

The parks in the city are in badly need of repair...filling in the holes in ball playing fields, old swimming pools and changing facilities, antiquated buildings, and lots of garbage.  Since our tax dollars go to support so many worthy and higher priority causes, why not seek local corporate support to fix some of these facilities? We wouldn't have to rename the parks after these companies but we could give them credit and signage.  Especially for capital investments in facilities. A world class city deserves better! Renaissance Fair Meeting
June 7th, 2007 3:25 pm

For a year we tried to get a 5 minute meeting with Mayor Newsom - we've been steadily building an annual event over the last 5 years in San Francisco and wanted to discuss how to better offer it to the city and to discuss it's educational offerings to children of all ages, but also to bring up the challenges of bringing cultural events to the city. But after many delays and cancellations, we were shuffled to a subaltern in the parks department. We would have liked just a few minutes to let the mayor know what had been brought Read This Posty »

Why are all the bathrooms in public parks closed on the weekend?
June 7th, 2007 3:22 pm

It is such a drag to have to take your child or yourself to peep or poop in the bushes when you are at the park on the weekends. I went to a great party in a public park in West Hollywood. They get a lot of money from parking tickets I guess, but really it's embarrassing that our beautiful parks have no restroom facilities. Tule Elk Park Child Development Center Funding Cuts
June 7th, 2007 8:24 am

The fact that the best afterschool program in the city is being run into the ground and no one in city government will lift a finger to help.  Tule Elk Park Child Development Center has had funding cut for the last few years.  This is the famous CDC that transformed their asphalt "playground" into a lovely garden and park, added an environmental educator and enhanced their art program.  It's the crown jewel of the city and now faces cuts that threaten the very programs that parents, educators, local merchants and benefactors helped put together.  It is clear evidence that this Read This Posty »

Locked Bathrooms at Playgrounds
June 5th, 2007 10:41 am

The city has many nice playgrounds for kids but they are virtually unusable during the times most busy working families can use them because the bathrooms are locked!!!! Kids and their parents need to go to the bathroom, so if you are going to have playground open have the bathrooms unlocked. I have found them locked on Sundays (the most popular day for most playgrounds) after 5 on weekdays during daily savings time and even on Saturdays near fields where a hundred kids are playing soccer. If you are truly interested in keeping families in the city, this would be Read This Posty »
