I sent in a pet peeve awhile back, and realized afterward that I referred to the wrong streets.. *blush* I'm really disturbed by the amount of jaywalking and reckless driving on my way home from work, especially around the area of the United Nations Plaza, McAllister/Hyde/8th Street etc. In my earlier message, I proposed building a pedestrian overpass. I'm not sure if that's the best solution, but I wish something could be done about the hair-raising activity there. Between the crazy drivers and the pedestrians that seem to think of the crosswalk and traffic lights as a sort of suggestion, Read This Posty »

Too many drivers think they don't have to stop at crosswalks. If it's a crosswalk with no light or stop sign, maybe 1 in 10 drivers stops for a pedestrian. Maybe one of those mid-road pedestrian signs should be put at every crosswalk that's not at a light or stop sign.

As a driver, I have noticed that SF pedestrians very often will walk or run out into the middle of the street, right into the flow of traffic, usually without even looking! I see this at least 3 times every morning, usually 5. I know pedestrians have the right of way, but these people seem to have lost their sense of self-preservation. As a NYC transplant, I grew up with a healthy fear of being hit by a three ton chunk of metal traveling at 40 mph, so I look both ways before crossing, especially when jaywalking! No driver deliberately Read This Posty »

When they stand way out in the vehicle traffic lanes like that, vehicles cannot safely make legal right (or left) turns without fear of hitting the pedestrian. Vehicle traffic would flow much more smoothly if pedestrians would obey the laws too.
Another peeve is pedestrians walking against red lights. Vehicles are ticketed for running red lights, why not pedestrians? All this talk of "pedestrian rights" is admirable, however no consideration is given to drivers who are driving to obey the laws, only to see pedestrians flaunt them repeatedly without punishment.

And it is dangerous for pedestrians in this very nice part of San Francisco.
Please install stop signs on the cross streets to slow the traffic.
Thanks for listening!

It seems as though a lot of attention is being paid to fixing pot holes and leveling off streets, but not to improving safety standards on the street. If you drive through many neighborhoods, you will see that pedestrian zone paint in the streets, for example, is fading in so many intersections that it is almost impossible to see. Similarly, there are so many crowded and dangerous intersections that need stop lights, not just stop signs. And others that do not even have stop signs. Further, pedestrian safety signage in parts of the city is woefully inadequate. In light of Read This Posty »

One more for the record books if you truly track these at all. Can you do something about the pedestrians in this city. I read articles and see constant reporting about how pedestrians put their lives at risk crossing our city streets. I drive and walk in this city everyday. I see people jaywalking, walking in the middle the street, standing in intersections on green lights or sauntering as if they are strolling in the park on a Sunday against the traffic. Some even stop in intersections with rushing on-coming cars daring them to hit them saying "I'm walking here". Read This Posty »

They, as well as WalkSF, think the countdown is to tell them how much time they have to start crossing whereas it is for people off the curb to finish. This prevents traffic from turning right, causing back-ups, congestion, and air pollution from idling vehicles.

Some minor pet peeves:
1) I love MUNI, but some buses are very slow. The 14 and 49 do not need to stop at EVERY block. This increases the travel time considerably - and the Mission is congested and slow enough as it is. The 48 bus is consistently late and too infrequent. It's the only direct route between the Mission and the Sunset.
2) The pedestrian/driver quandary. Cars are huge metallic machines that clearly will win in the battle of the wits, shall we say. Pedestrians should not take the right of way - rather, they should wait until traffic has Read This Posty »

I have a couple of pet peeves.
1. I work in the Union Square area and think that every light should have a walk only signal, then a drive only signal. A good example is the corner of O'Farrell and Stockton. As we continue to build up the retail area on Market and Mission streets, we are encouraging more pedestrian traffic ( all good for the economy), but we are creating terrible traffic and unsafe walking/driving conditions.
2. We have terrible roads in the city, too many potholes to count. Please fix this!
3. Speed bumps in residential communities. I live in Read This Posty »

All too many times I read about or hear on the media as to another "poor poor pedestrian" was severely injured or killed by an evil motorist not caring about the lives of others and driving dangerously.
Hogwash!
As an ex-commercial all class vehicle driver I've seen congestion take its toll on this city, as well as others. The people crossing the street are not looking out for their own lives, and have much less respect for the road rules also. I have NO problem with jaywalkers who use their brain and cross safely. People who jaywalk or cross against the light Read This Posty »

On several occasions I have been at an intersection - at the same time as a cop car (sometimes two cars) - when cars run the red light or stop sign, AND THE COP(s) DO NOTHING!
Also the JAY WALKING pedestrians at the following intersections - while the cops are busy harassing the homeless just sitting (NOT PAN HANDLING) on the side walk near by:
Market/Castro/17th Street
Castro/18th Street
