My Pet Peeve is Crime and Fear
September 21st, 2007 7:36 am

Please help prevent people from being mugged on the short 1 to 2 block stroll from Cortland Street to their homes.   With the recent shift in demographics in Bernal Heights, you'd be surprised at how many of your loyal constituents reside there. Name Withheld Read This Posty »

I’m a biker and support all non-oil burning forms of transportation
September 17th, 2007 7:18 am

I understand some people need to drive, but private vehicles and buses that run red lights should be ticketed. I have almost been hit several times and one of those times a police car was at the intersection of Market and Hayes and did not do a thing. Please ensure that our laws are enforced for our own safety - especially for those of us trying to save our world for the next generations and have no chance of survival against 2 tons of steel.  Thank you! -Jen Read This Posty »

“Homeless” advocates usually have the process backwards
September 12th, 2007 11:07 am

The broken windows theory outlined below is exactly why I ask people to stay on top of new encampments of drunks and junkies as they appear in neighborhoods. Market Street west of Van Ness is a perfect example of an area that such people are trying to take over. That is why I call the police every time I pass a drunk passed out on the sidewalk or trying to set up a camp or just sitting getting drunk making rude comments to passersby. I hope everyone is doing this also. And once again, I would like to say that Read This Posty »

Hundreds of Motorcycles at 3rd and Harrison
September 9th, 2007 8:37 am

Sunday September 9 at 12pm there are hundreds of motorcycles taking over the parking lot at 3rd and Harrison.  The bus lanes and sidewalks are full of cycles.  The traffic is at a standstill.  Mayor, there is one police car, and both officers are standing among the bikes, for nearly a hour, doing NOTHING.  When will you actually make Heather Fong and her team do their jobs and police people?  Name Withheld Read This Posty »

Violence on the streets
September 4th, 2007 10:20 am

I just walked by the aftermath of a man having been nearly beaten to death by three other men this morning near Alamo Square. I've been mugged at gun point along Fulton St. not too far from there. I know people say it was worse in the eighties, but I've lived here for eight years, and the violence is worsening from  where I stand. Name Withheld Read This Posty »

HOLD PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE
August 20th, 2007 9:56 am

I just want to applaud Newsom, Dufty, and Fong for the wonderful leadership being shown with the handling of the Castro Halloween party.  I mean seriously, what's better than the people who are supposed to lead and be in control saying "we can't handle our responsibilities, so we're just not going to this year". Wonderful.  I mean, yes, it's true that the Police department can't handle their responsibilities any other day of the year, and yet Heather Fong still has a job for some reason.  The SFPD can't even recruit officers despite the ridiculously high pay.  The officers they do Read This Posty »

We’re turning into one of the most filthy cities in the US
August 20th, 2007 9:47 am

Just because you are homeless does not give you the right to break the law buying and selling drugs on the street, doing drugs in front of families and children and especially tourists and lastly to clog our city subways, doorsteps and business entryways as sleeping quarters, panhandling spots and freak show theaters. If this were New York or any other sensible city, the police, and general public would be outraged and would ask them to leave the premises sending them to a shelter or get tougher and tell them to get out of the city. Some homeless are truly in Read This Posty »

Mayor, do you or do you not stand for the law?
August 20th, 2007 9:44 am

What if everyone one in the morning commute decided they didn't want to pay toll and just drove through the toll gates without paying?  What if everyone decided they didn't want to pay to get into AT&T park and thousands of people hopped the rails to get in?  I'm sure the mayor would be outraged.  Yet, Mayor Newsome continues to draw no outrage to Critical Mass which is nearing its 15 year anniversary. I have no issues with bike riders wanting to protest for their cause.  I do take issue with their disregard for the law.  If a mass of people Read This Posty »

Graffiti, littering of all sorts, and pointless destruction of structures
August 20th, 2007 9:30 am

It's hard to pick one and only one, but I suppose my pet peeve encompasses graffiti, littering of all sorts, and pointless destruction of structures meant for everyone's use and pleasure, such as bus shelters, benches, and public plantings.  If only there were sufficient police and park rangers to safeguard our lovely city and keep it from sliding into one vast, unflushed toilet.  The bad guys are definitely winning this round.  I'd gladly pay more taxes just to get the city cleaned up and keep it that way. Robberies in the Marina
July 27th, 2007 7:51 am

Hopefully this gets to Gavin... Gavin, We've met and socialized a bit down at Balboa over the past year or two - I believe we share many friendships from the neighborhood.  I've been living in the Marina for almost 8 years now, and the latest crime in our area has become very personal to me as close friends of mine have been held up at gun point and stripped of all their belongings.  After a bit of investigation, it turns out that over 11 incidents have occurred here recently, all have been attributed to the same group/gang.  The disturbing piece is Read This Posty »

Drunks are poor because they’re drunks
July 26th, 2007 8:23 am

In April a comment on a post here contained this sentence: Cops should be giving 100% of their attention to violent crime, not making things look shiny and hiding the realities of poverty. Why do so many people complain about this? I fail to see the logic, and no, I'm not high at the moment." Leaving aside the unfounded assumption that drunks in the street are really just unfairly targeted poor people rather than drunks who are poor because they're drunks, there is the wonderfully helpful concept of "The Tipping Point". Five years ago, there were no "homeless" in my neighborhood. Then Read This Posty »

The only people really welcome here are drunks and junkies
July 25th, 2007 8:06 am

I guess it was inevitable despite our efforts to keep the bums out of our neighborhood, there is one now regularly sleeping in front of our building. I called the Police General Dispatch and got a self-righteous little jerk (Dispatcher 80, I believe) who began to lecture me that homelessness is not a crime. Yeah, like I was calling because the person is homeless. No, I was calling because the person trashes the front of our building and uses the back for a toilet. But that didn't matter to this dispatcher as he was well versed in the lies-designed-to-shame-critics crafted Read This Posty »

Why does Heather Fong still have a job?
July 24th, 2007 11:06 pm

My latest pet peeve is that mayor Newsom and the San Francisco Police Department have ignored the pleas from me and many other law-abiding San Franciscans to do SOMETHING about the crime and violence in our neighborhoods. Routinely when I call the police non-emergency line about homeless camping, people fighting, or people shooting up in doorways next to my apartment, NOTHING is done.  Sometimes I'm lied to that something will be done or was done the last time I called.  In all cases, I am ignored.  I've posted repeatedly on this very pet peeve blog my experiences dealing with the police Read This Posty »

MUNI Police Not Riding Buses
July 24th, 2007 7:13 am

I am sooooooooooo tired of "Ghetto Brats" getting on MUNI Bus threw the back door and no one is making them pay for anything.   Also that the MUNI police are always on MUNI Metro train and NEVER on buses above ground. They would get a lot more people if they would go on above ground bus. Name Withheld Read This Posty »

Can MUNI police actually get real work to do like watching for our safety?
July 24th, 2007 7:12 am

In my continuing frustration walking to and from the Powell Street MUNI/Bart Station to my place of work near Union Square, a friend let me know about this website.  Frankly, I am doubtful this will help, but will give it a try.  For me, and thousands of others who have to use this station to get to work, this becomes representative of what San Francisco is like to LIVE in.  Unfortunately, I do not have the good fortune of working around the Montgomery Station or Embarcadero.  Every day without fail, I am treated to what is like a human toilet Read This Posty »

Once again, SFPD is apathetic towards the concerns of law abiding citizens
July 24th, 2007 7:07 am

Watching TV peacefully in my living room this evening, I'm disturbed by yelling and screaming outside my window.  Granted I live @ Market and Powell Streets, but this confrontation was so unusually loud and heated, it drew me to the window. I see four people screaming and yelling at each other emphatically waving their arms, getting in each others faces.  In short, I see an argument - an argument that could easily escalate into a physical confrontation - or worse. I call SFPD non emergency.  I give descriptions of all four, I tell them about the confrontation and ask them to send Read This Posty »

Mission war zone
July 23rd, 2007 8:04 am

Rising crime, graffiti and streets only a 3rd world country could be proud of.   What is the plan, Gavin, for our streets?  Seems there are lots of initiatives for relatively small and needy (and deserving) sections of our city's populace...what about the bigger problems. Pandering to Poverty Pimps
July 23rd, 2007 8:00 am

Where to begin... The beggars plying their trade in this city are not "homeless" and it would be nice if I could go to the store w/out constantly being accosted!  We need laws enforced for the benefit of taxpaying citizens, so firing the incompetent token of a police chief would be a good start.  And btw, Polk street from Union on down is a sewer.  Aren't there laws on the books about keeping the front of businesses CLEAN?   The DPW is MIA in SF.  Enough pandering to poverty pimps and bums and throwing good $ away on gangs who respond to Read This Posty »
