Last week my brother got mugged while walking home from work late at night (he's a waiter at a restaurant downtown and takes the BART back to the Mission after work). As a home owner/occupier in the city who grew up in the Midwestern suburbs it amazes me that, in spite of the incredible financial resources at the city's disposal, there is such a shortfall regarding basic quality of life issues like cleanliness and safety.
