It is after all, just garbage. Seeing more and more of it on the #1 California - on crowded buses.

I'm reaching a point of being completely fed up about a quality-of-life issue that never seems to be addressed.
I firmly believe that the recycling center on the Market St. Safeway property has become a public nuisance and should be closed. Since we now have curbside recycling from every SF household, the only purpose the Community Recyclers facility serves is to create an "industry" of theft, where homeless people go through peoples' recycling bins, stealing recyclables and strewing trash all over the street, so that they can sell the recyclables at the recycling center.
This is NOT a victimless crime. My neighbors Read This Posty »

Could we find something better to do with used paper coffee cups than adding them to our land fills, could we do this as close to the point of sale as possible and involving the retailer?

My pet peeve is about the people who go through the recycling cans before the trash is picked up by Sunset Scavengers. I thought that our great City was known for recycling and that WE make money on the recycled products. The Taraval Police station refuses to do anything because it is a "municipal" matter. So, Mayor Newsom, who would handle that? I don't appreciate strangers going through my trash when it is against the law. How do I know that those people going through the garbage aren't into identity theft? As a home Read This Posty »

I moved here from Palo Alto where I could recycle milk cartons, styrofoam, and more. The list of recyclable items from my city-awarded-monopoly-provider, Sunset Scavenger, is much worse - making me turn perfectly recyclable products into trash.
Please support the recyclability of more things! Take a hint from Cole Hardware, where we can drop off paint cans, batteries, and more!

I understand that much of the paper we put in the blue recycling bins gets shipped (via polluting freighter) to China for reprocessing (in coal-powered plants) into cardboard boxes used to contain consumer goods that are shipped back to the U.S. Maybe the net impact of our paper recycling is worse for the world environment. Why don't we have a domestic green business solution for this? I am afraid we might be fooling ourselves when we recycle our paper. San Francisco could take the lead on this matter, as it does for several environmental issues. Please look into the matter Read This Posty »

Not only do they noisily go through the containers on the street all through the night before morning pick-up, but they spill papers and debris all over the sidewalk. I believe that this program has a benefit for the city's parks. Since all the valuable aluminum cans are taken before the recyclers arrive that benefit is eliminated. This is pilfering and it against the law. What about attaching a large sticker on the can stating (in both English and Chinese) that only city authorized recyclers can remove contents in these cans left on the street, and that it is against Read This Posty »

I'm not talking about the homeless folk or old asian ladies who gather a few beer bottles with gloved hands or picker sticks from your blue bins, no big deal there, except when they toss garbage all over the street .
I am talking about the organized teams and crews who drive cars and trucks around the neighborhood systematically looting every deposit bottle from each container on the block. Certainly this must result in higher fees for all of us who thought we were contributing that value to whomever holds the trash pickup contract with SF.

I live in Excelsior on Paris just off of Russia between Russia and Persia. Two doors away our neighbor parks his truck which he fills with recycling (bottles, cans, glass, cardboard) all week long filling it up and hauling it away once a week. We have to look at this eyesore all week long as he fills his truck up. At best it is an eyesore at worst a potential health and safety hazard.
I have spoken with several police officers in the neighborhood and they say nothing can be done. I would bet this would not be allowed in Read This Posty »

How do we stop people from going through our recycling bins during the night before pickup? They create noise, a mess and remove funds from the city.
Perhaps it's time to abolist the bottle/can recycling fee. We all recycle anyway.

Knowing what we know now about global warming and other environmental crises, it is absurd (and selfish) that some people still do not recycle, especially given the ease of SF's curbside recycling program. I think SF should fine people who do not recycle and use the proceeds to pay people to sift through trash for recyclables.

There is a recycling center located at the corner of Market street and Dubose. Every day hoards of homeless with shopping carts trudge past our neighborhood, often spilling their bottles in front of the house. I understand the need for a recycling center but don't know why it needs to be located on Market street. My friends and I are weary of being hounded for change and smokes every time we leave our houses. it's nearly impossible to have a quiet moment sitting outside of our local cafe, just because so many people use Market street to transport their cans Read This Posty »
