People have to frequently walk through Chinatown to catch MUNI
November 8th, 2007 9:51 am

Problem: The delivery trucks are constantly blocking the roads, and if not the trucks then the boxes and food shipments are on the roads and sidewalks, which means that pedestrians must walk on the roads to catch the buses. This is not only dangerous, it is against the law. Why are you not doing anything about this? Name Withheld Read This Posty »

Homeless in the Financial District
October 29th, 2007 11:00 am

A few homeless are ruining the streets of the financial district where I live and work.  Nothing we do seems to help.  Please let us know that you care and that you will do something about this.  At night our sidewalks and doorways become camping sites and bathrooms. Handicap/Ramp Curb Cuts
October 26th, 2007 8:24 am

Oftentimes at our corners there is only one, and it is in the center of the curb. This forces the user to walk out into traffic. L-M Millrod Read This Posty »

Unlevel sidewalks!
October 26th, 2007 8:19 am

My mother tripped and fell due to uneven sidewalk on Geary Blvd.  She ended up severely bruising her face.  When I took her to the emergency room at CPMC, the attending physician said he sees accidents like this DAILY because of the poorly maintained sidewalks.  I'm a jogger and I'm constantly on the look out for uneven sidewalks.  I've seen uneven sidewalks painted a bright orange to highlight the hazard but that is it.  When is the city going to fix this?  Edwin Read This Posty »

Trees Violating City Fire Code
October 15th, 2007 7:48 am

The city does not maintain or trim its city owned tress in the 1900 to 2400 block of Hyde, or any other block for that matter.  When you complain to DPW, nothing happens. Tress are overgrown and dangerous and tearing up sidewalks. Worst of all they grow up into fire escapes, violating city fire code, by blocking egress.  I guarantee you nothing will be done because I wrote this. Name Withheld Read This Posty »

How about getting the cracks in city streets fixed
October 12th, 2007 9:05 am

A crack, hole, or rise in the surface of our streets of less than an inch or greater may sound like small potatoes to you, but try traveling between California and Market streets (including the sidewalks) in a standard or power wheelchair. It can be a jarring experience, not to mention the wear and tear on the chair. If you think I'm kidding, you are welcome to try the trip yourself. Just borrow a chair and do it. As a matter of fact, I am more than willing to let you borrow my powerchair.   Also, what Read This Posty »

The filthy conditions of our streets and sidewalks
October 11th, 2007 7:44 am

I think the mayor needs to focus his energies on resolving the horrible and out of control situation that San Franciscans are forced to deal with on their streets on a daily basis, the aggressive panhandling, the defecation and urination, and the filthy conditions of our streets and sidewalks. Other cities have resolved these problems and, until our streets and sidewalks are once again livable, these problems need to be his number one concern.  People are tired of hearing of excuses, we are tired of  being embarrassed when our friends and family come to visit and ask why we allow Read This Posty »

Lack of Police Control of Critical Mass
October 8th, 2007 10:28 am

Lack of traffic enforcement of traffic laws for bicycle riders who are on our sidewalks and seemingly think no traffic laws apply to them. Lack of police control of critical mass results in anarchy on the streets. Paul Bennett Read This Posty »

The “Broken Window” theory
September 6th, 2007 7:29 am

This explanation of the "broken window" theory was written by Henry G. Cisneros when he was Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. It was published in a series of essays titled "Defensible Space: Deterring Crime and Building Community" - January 1995. James Q. Wilson and George Kelling developed the `broken windows' thesis to explain the signaling function of neighborhood characteristics. This thesis suggests that the following sequence of events can be expected in deteriorating neighborhoods. Evidence of decay (accumulated trash, broken windows, deteriorated building exteriors) remains in the neighborhood for a reasonably long period of time. People who live and Read This Posty »

Sidewalks
August 9th, 2007 2:43 pm

They just repaved Edna street in the Sunnyside. Someone on the 600 block has a building permit and they had dumpsters delivered. The dumpsters destroyed the newly paved street when they were removed when full. Does the city permit department take notice of this during inspection and charge the homeowner for destroying the street? Bruce Olitzky Read This Posty »

Advertising Outside Residences
August 1st, 2007 1:46 am

Day after day you see sidewalks and streets cluttered with printed advertisements that have been put on door knobs, posts, and fences. The major culprit seems to be restaurants with "to go" menus, but many other businesses leave unwanted and unsolicited junk mail on a regular basis. The City should create an Opt-Out register for this kind of advertising. Anyone who does not want to receive this kind of marketing can sign up -- ideally at no cost online. Businesses would be required to obtain the addresses of all residents who do not want to bothered with this junk mail. Any Read This Posty »

Please return the trash cans to Clement Street’s Innner Richmond District
July 18th, 2007 9:14 am

The extra clean patrol really helped the street litter problem. Since the trash cans have been removed, there is much more litter on the streets, thus creating more work for the Clean Patrol. If trash cans were available people would not just drop their litter on the sidewalk. Thanks Name Withheld Read This Posty »

Not Enough Cans at 7th St. between Mission & Market Streets
July 18th, 2007 9:13 am

Sidewalk parking enforcement
July 17th, 2007 10:08 am

Please give some attention to the issue of the rising number of cars parked on the sidewalk and the unwillingness of DPT to enforce the existing law prohibiting it.  In my 13 years in San Francisco it has become increasingly harder every year to be a pedestrian. Recently, I have been often forced to venture out into the street with my three year old to avoid a car "parked in their driveway". When I contacted the DPT about scofflaws parking on the sidewalk to avoid street cleaning tickets the officer in charge told me that it was allowed and that I Read This Posty »

Construction creating a dangerous scenario for pedestrians and joggers
June 22nd, 2007 10:46 am

I jog on Pacific Avenue every morning.  For at least the past four months, the home on 2712 Pacific Avenue between Scott and Divisidero has been undergoing construction.  Because the driveway, sidewalk and street right in front of this home are constantly blocked due to all of the construction work, I have to run out around all of it out in the street, facing onoming traffic.  Needless to say, the construction creating a dangerous scenario for pedestrians and joggers.  Aren't there laws in our city for creating safe passageways for pedestrians when a home is undergoing construction? People Using Hose to Clear Leaves
June 21st, 2007 8:17 am

It makes me so frustrated to see people clearing leaves and trash away from in front of their homes or from their driveways using a hose. It is a waste of water because hosing down leaves and trash makes it sticky and requires more time and water, whereas simply sweeping up the dry clutter is much faster and more eco-friendly. There is a terrible stench on some of the streets
June 18th, 2007 8:10 am

Dear Mayor Newsom: Two things I believe to be important for the city: First, it seems San Francisco is getting filthier.  I am embarrassed by the detritis littering our streets.  I can't imagine the impression the many tourists in SF take back to their homes.  Both Chicago and New York are much cleaner than SF.  Chinatown is especially horrific.  There is a terrible stench on some of the streets, there is trash and filth everywhere and there are clothes hanging from balconies, which is especially unsightly and completely unnecessary.  Cigarette butts line every block and not just in Chinatown.  It would not Read This Posty »
