Mr. Newsom,
You need to be much more proactive in preventing crime and homeless solicitations in SOMA, the Tendorloin & Market Street. Numerous visitors & friends of mine have commented on how "ugly & nasty the problem is" specifically in high traffic tourist areas. I lived in NYC when Mayor Guiliani was in office and he cleaned all of Manhattan up with a strengthened police force, you definitely need to do the same from 6th street to 2nd Street, Market to Brannan. This starts with simply having a police presence and the rest will take care of itself.
~Thanks,

Make flyers that appear on cars in SOMA ILLEGAL. They just become litter as if the city needs more of that! MORE Police presence South Beach. I had 2 13 yr olds threaten me with what appeared to be a gun for watching them as they cased cars on Hawthorn Ln. that they wanted to break windows of. VERY SCARY!

I live in the SOMA district on Guy Place. There has been a port o potty on the street for construction for 2 years!! When we call to complain or ask how much longer it will be there, we just get sent to another department.

Supervisor Chris Daly's interpretation of quality of life is to step over homeless people laying out on the front of your porch or view them on the way to work. This is the quality of life that we working class people have been tolerating for years. Our city's improvements from Supervisor Chris Daly as Mayor would be similar to SOMA and the Tenderloin district.
I ask you San Franciscans do we want this type of lifestyle for our community? Our major problem that has been haunting our city is crime, filth, substance abusers, the mentally ill, homeless and it has increased, Read This Posty »

Drivers run red lights, turn right on red when pedestrians are in the crosswalk, park on the sidewalk, and generally ignore all traffic laws. We have had too many avoidable deaths already. Start enforcing the laws. If our current police chief can't do it, find one who can.

Supervisor Chris Daly who oversees the SOMA district, my district, has not made any significant improvements in my neighborhood and his priorities are discombobulated. Mr. Daly's policy is not triggered toward improvements in his district but he would rather have it remain as it is today, a ghetto. Mr. Daly should be representing the working class people who pay taxes and want changes in their community, instead his policies do nothing but leave us San Franciscans handling the burden of the homeless and the criminals. What type of Supervisor are you, Mr. Daly? You have done nothing constructive for the SOMA district, just look Read This Posty »

I'm a long time resident of SOMA/South Beach (since 1989). I gave up my car two years ago because street parking became impossible. Since then I have spent half my life waiting for MUNI buses and trains.
1) There is no direct route E-W (Brannen/Bryant) to get to Trader Joe's on 9th St. so I used to take the 15 bus to/from to TJ's in Fisherman's Wharf.
2. I depend on the J to get to/from evening classes from the Embarcadero at the James Lick High School (Noe/Clipper)but it is so unreliable that I'm usually late arriving and sometimes don't get Read This Posty »

Why does it seem that the rights of the homeless and drug dealers in the Tenderloin and SOMA trump the rights of the citizens living in the neighborhood. Let's implement (and enforce) loitering laws and post drug dealer pictures for all to see! We want these people out of our neighborhood.
(Not to be cynical, but I'm sure if we moved all the dealers and homeless to Pacific Heights, the problem would be solved in a week.)

My Pet Peeve how are you going to clean up the South Market area when you stuck with Chris Daly who is the Supervisor for my district. Every time when there is good for the welfare of the working class people who pay taxes on our salary every time we get paid have to deal with Chris Daly who turns around and objects to the proposals for the working class people. Chris Daly tends to focus only on the need. I read there will be units available for affordable housing in my district but if SOMA still remains like it Read This Posty »

Dear Mayor Newsom...
Witnesses to SF Shooting Describe Shocking Scene
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Police investigating the shooting of a man at the Fifth Street off-ramp from the Bay Bridge by another man does not appears to have been a targeted attack although witnesses have said it did not appear the suspect and victim knew each other.
Granted this latest shooting seems to be yet another "random" event in SOMA, but it begs the question, "why does it seem that crime is radically increasing in SOMA?" As a result of the recent increase, my wife and I have decided to get out. Read This Posty »

My Pet Peeve is Chris Daly who I vote for the first time around. I cannot believe he is so stubborn and cannot see the light regarding the condition of San Francisco especially in the SOMA and Tenderloin area. Is Chris Daly that close minded that he cannot see that a Community Court will benefit our City. I am a native of San Francisco born and raise here. Most of the Homeless people urinate at ATM machines and sleep in alley ways with their carts, blankets that are disgusting looking and smell. Read This Posty »

I own a barbershop/spa on 5th and Folsom. I have customers come from all over the bay area. Meters are a joke 25 cents for 6 minutes and only 1 hour time limit? Come on! With all the new high rises going up in SOMA and all the existing parking lots being eaten up by new condo construction the city is going to have a huge mess on it's hands. I'm all for a green city, but you can't expect people to take public transportation if it doesn't work.

I worked at the Federal Building on Golden Gate Avenue and their is a problem with the homeless making their stay in the front of the ATM machine and it is quiet bothersome that you have to work around them to get to the machine. Like to day I want to take such money out from the ATM could not because they had this huge shopping cart right in front of the ATM machine. Is there something that can be do about this? Can there be more mobile assistant partol that can scout out the areas particular in the vicinty Read This Posty »

Though I am not a member of the Graffiti Advisory Board, I have been very involved with the GAB for well over a year. I live in district 6 (SOMA) where the worst graffiti problem in SF resides. I have been extremely active in providing photographic evidence and have e-mails for every piece of graffiti tht I have reported. I have been very constructive in providing my time and by providing proof to help DPW improve its efforts at enforcing graffiti abatement (I am focused on provate property). We have recently gotten the City Attorney's office to dedicate resources to Read This Posty »

hey gavin,
i have lived near south park for ten years -- had a baby last year and, under pressure, considering the inevitable...leave the city. however, i see hope in SOMA -- new library, playground on the embarcadero, playground on folsom and 7th...etc. why don't you throw the parents here some incentives not to bail out...and a good one would be the planned re-hab of south park...could really help with critical mass not to just give up and cede this district to the homeless...on that note, it is a DRAG living with the huge bum community here....thanks in advance for whatever Read This Posty »

My pet peeve is the area under the Bay Bridge. For the residents of SOMA (particularly South Beach), we have to walk under a bridge to get to/from work, and that is a messy and dangerous construction site. The sidewalks are cracked and I am constantly dodging trash and clutter in the sidewalks. Homeless people gather here making it unsafe for residents to access the rest of the city. Please make an effort to remedy the areas on 2nd and 3rd streets between Bryant and Harrison so that residents can safely walk to and from home to anywhere else.

I walk to work from my SOMA home to downtown every day, and witness the litter and filth along the sidewalks that have been used as a public trash can and restroom, with homeless persons camped in entry ways of businesses and residences. If Giuliani was able to do it (for NYC), you can too! Get tough, and you'll get my vote.

Having to walk to and from work every day up the middle of my SOMA street because both sidewalks are either blocked by homeless encampments or have fresh human excrement and/or vomit on them. It's disgusting. We constantly call Southern Station and/or DPW and nothing is ever done. Also, the moronic tagging of everything - even the new palm trees at Howard and 6th Street. And the corner stores who sell cheap liquor in brown paper bags, who just add to the homeless problem, by encouraging them to get drunk and often abusive. I can't wait for 6th Street to Read This Posty »

The rift raft, beggars, homeless, and scammers that linger in SOMA, Union Sq, etc. pan handling. How is it that NYC and Chicago manage to resolve this, but it is a free for in SF. I get tired of being harassed, etc, constantly all day long.

Crime.
Crime crime crime.
My wife and I are expecting our first child. I've lived in SOMA for 15 years, and owned my home there for the last 8, near 6th and Folsom. The crime rate in SOMA has been on the rise for the past several years (a 15 to 30% increase over the past year alone). On our alley, people regularly sell drugs, coupon tickets to the local porn shop, drink, defecate, urinate, prostitute and leave their used needles and condoms all over the sidewalks. It's a health hazard. You have to walk in the street to avoid them. Trash Read This Posty »
