The homeless situation in San Francisco has gone from bad to worse. All those promises when you were running for mayor have gone up in smoke simply because there are seemingly more, and seem to be entrenched. In those days before the election I once saw you on the Van Ness Avenue divider strip, bent over, talking to a homeless person. I thought to myself that here we have, finally, a man who intends to do something to solve the homeless situation. It was not to be. Not perceptiably at least.
Soon after I saw you, as I prepared to go Read This Posty »

We moved out of San Francisco last month because we could not get to/from our daily activities without stepping over the homeless, stepping in dog feces, stepping around garbage, or being stuck on the N-Judah. It's a shame that San Francisco has deteriorated to the point that we felt we had no choice but to move to a city that respects it's citizen's efforts to make the simplest of activities be just that.

I try to ride a bicycle as much as possible, the condition of the city streets and the roadways in Golden Gate Park are dangerous. The route I frequent, along Stanyan Street, is a total washboard and entails using only the middle of the road , to avoid the washboard edges, which makes for bad interaction with motorists. Take a look at Stanyan Street from Parnassus to Frederick; or look at almost any road in Golden Gate Park for examples. Only the part of JFK Drive between Stanyan and 19th Ave. has any decent pavement.

Dear Mayor,
While I agree with your new action plan to try and get homeless people off the streets, I thought I would send a few thoughts about this topic. There are some who honestly cannot help their situation, and those are the ones who would more likely be willing to take the alternative that they would be offered. Even a shelter is better than sleeping on a sidewalk or doorway.
There are various reasons why people end up on the streets, one of them being a personal choice. Most choose it so they don't have to pay rent or other bills, Read This Posty »

(1) Three lanes instead of four around the curve in front of Park police station.
(2) Inadequate bicycle lanes in downtown.
(3) Right-turn conflicts with pedestrians at Market & Van Ness.

My suggestion is to enforce existing laws, such as parking meter (no feeding), traffic laws for cars and bicycles (driving in bus lanes, red light runners, stop signs, stopping before turning on a red light), etc. and other things such as pedestrian and bicycle safety, availability of meters and spaces, etc. would improve. I drive a lot and find no one enforcing any laws. I believe parking meters are good for retail neighborhoods (2 hour limit), and garages are too expensive and not always available. Enforcement of existing laws would conceivably pay for itself and bring money into the city Read This Posty »

I received an infraction yesterday in the tenderloin for driving in a bus lane. The problem is i was going to make a right hand turn onto Van Ness. How else do you make a right without driving in a bus lane on Geary? This is on the edge of tenderloin. About 3 blocks prior i saw a homeless man with a stolen shopping cart and an addict smoking crack. Where do we draw the line in this city? I told the officer about what i had observed and his reply was "don't you know what neighborhood you are in?" Read This Posty »

I like living in San Francisco, and as far as I can tell you are doing a good job. I have a major issue though, and that is about the risks a pedestrian takes in this city to walk somewhere, especially during rush hour. People on cell phones and in a hurry rule the streets and it is dangerous, yet I have never seen a policeman give a ticket, and despite living on Townsend not that far from the police station on 8th and Bryant, I rarely see a policeman monitoring traffic. They seem to be plentiful around the ballpark Read This Posty »

My pet peeve is everything that's wrong with the planning (or lack of same) of Masonic Avenue, that leads it to be a hotbed of road rage, speeding and stress. I started a site and a movement, fixmasonic.org, to address this problem. We are in the process of gathering signatures with two basic goals in mind: 1) traffic calming (including a lower speed limit of 25 mph) appropriate for a residential street, and 2) creativity from MTA - daring even - to attack the multiple problems that make this street incomplete head-on. You'll be hearing more from me and my Read This Posty »

Desecration of a Catholic Church recently, people going wild in the streets: doing their sex acts and other perversions in front of children and others. Watch out: a city out of control and with no discipline will destroy itself. If you want to stop your city from destroying itself, maintain discipline and law and order.

I have lived in the city for 26 years always relying on Muni for transportation.
Until a few years ago it was a fantastic, efficient service at a very reasonable fee.
It has become a very poor transit system if you ask me. Our city officials want less cars on the streets and more people to ride Muni but have not put more trains or buses in service and have not shortened the time you have to wait for one. You can't have more demand without more supply.
With the exception of the 38 Geary which seems to run fairly frequently still Read This Posty »

A crack, hole, or rise in the surface of our streets of less than an inch or greater may sound like small potatoes to you, but try traveling between California and Market streets (including the sidewalks) in a standard or power wheelchair. It can be a jarring experience, not to mention the wear and tear on the chair. If you think I'm kidding, you are welcome to try the trip yourself. Just borrow a chair and do it. As a matter of fact, I am more than willing to let you borrow my powerchair.

When are you people going to wake up and realize that you have allowed vermon to ruin the once beutiful city of lights. My San Francisco is no longer the gorgeous city it used to be. You have allowed the gays to run wild and disgrace the Catholic Church, you won't allow our military to do commercials on the Golden Gate Bridge. Who put San Francisco in charge. You people are disgusting. And you Mr. Newsom are a disgrace to the American people when you say you will make your city a safe haven for illegals. You Mr. Newsom are Read This Posty »

I'm sick and tired of walking home from BART to my Nob Hill apartment thought the filth and dirt of this city. I spent two months in NY City this summer and was amazed at how clean it was compared to SF. I plan on moving as I am tired of nothing being done about this problem.
Sincerely,

I think the mayor needs to focus his energies on resolving the horrible and out of control situation that San Franciscans are forced to deal with on their streets on a daily basis, the aggressive panhandling, the defecation and urination, and the filthy conditions of our streets and sidewalks. Other cities have resolved these problems and, until our streets and sidewalks are once again livable, these problems need to be his number one concern.
People are tired of hearing of excuses, we are tired of being embarrassed when our friends and family come to visit and ask why we allow Read This Posty »
