Drugs and Gangs
January 27th, 2008

Run a campaign to boycott gangs:  "If you have to buy, buy from someone other than gangs."  It won't get rid of the drug problem but it will disperse the violence and murders cause by gangs.

For drugs, try licensing (medicinal) drug use like marijuana; legalize low-dosage drugs for recreational use.

Save energy with the power router
January 17th, 2008

Dear Mayor Newsom:

We appreciate the emphasis you have placed on making San Francisco a "green" city.  We are writing to propose the use of a technology which would drastically reduce the amount of electricity consumed by computers and related electronic equipment in city offices.

Normally computers (and most electronic equipment) consume only 55 to 65 percent of the energy drawn from the power grid.  The remaining 35 to 45 percent is wasted.  This energy is converted to higher order harmonics which do no useful work.  The amount of this loss is known as power factor, and is Read more »

Driving program for Seniors
January 17th, 2008

I would like to suggest the idea of a "driving buddy" program. The program would consist of senior citizens whom are physically unable to drive, yet still own cars and have the necessity of transport on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Said seniors would partner, or "buddy" up with another local licensed driver whom also has a like need of transportation. The buddy system would provide those who need to drive about town, but are physically unable too and those who are physically able to drive however lack the vehicle in which to drive. I would hope that this Read more »

Gasoline should fall into the “sin tax” category along with cigarettes and booze
January 11th, 2008

Here are two actions we should (but won't) take: 1) Increase gas tax by 100%, 200%, 500% or more. 2) make the tax money available for schools and law enforcement as well as transportation. This will accomplish four goals: 1) raise revenue for underfunded state needs, 2) penalize people who are "over-autoed" - that is, a single person who owns/drives a huge SUV or 4WD when they could get by just fine with a small gas efficient car, 3) increase usage of mass transit to reduce need for more highways, 4) encourage/force auto manufacturers to increase efficiency through innovation. It Read more »

Converting street lights and all traffic signals
January 9th, 2008

Many cities are converting all street lights and traffic signals to "Green living" LED's or energy saving light systems. It's green, the right thing to do, and in long run, saves the city money.

Post signs on the Embarcadero banning bikes
January 8th, 2008

There is already a solution - bike lanes; which are largely unused.  The sidewalk is already full of runners, walkers, tourists, moms with carriages etc.  Bikes are dangerous and should not be allowed.  I ride often and I use the bike lanes.  Bikes should follow the same rules as cars.  The benefit to cyclists is they don't have to dodge pedestrians.  The bike coalition is fighting for cyclists rights and I agree, but cyclists should do their part and be courteous, conscientious riders.  Please ban bikes along the Embarcadero.  The bike lanes are already in place.

Thanks,

Plant vines to combat graffiti
January 3rd, 2008

Plant vines like Bougainvillea, Boston Ivy, etc. where there is a chronic graffiti problem.  I have seen buildings that even after cleanup, cannot avoid graffiti vandalism for more than a couple of days.  I think it could help.

Communications between SFPD & DPT
December 19th, 2007

Communications between the SFPD and the DPT should be improved for situations where citizens have had their vehicles stolen. My vehicle was stolen and recovered with damage when the DPT was issuing a citation as the theives abandoned it on a public street. I have since attempted to reconcile this matter by phone. The first time I called, I was on hold with DPT for over 45 minutes at which time I opted to hang up. I was able to get through to them today and am sending a letter explaining my situation. In a nut shell, it seems entirely Read more »

Fix 101 South
December 19th, 2007

Hi Mayor Gavin!

I've been driving to San Mateo everyday via the 101. The second lane (2nd from the left) has a huge crack running along the lane for quite a distance. Some of the cracks are potholes already. I think it needs some fixing.

Smaller Car Incentives
December 17th, 2007

I want to contribute ideas to Mayor Newsom.

First of I think he's doing a great job with cutting edge ideas and newsworthy initiatives.  I like the idea that he made SF into a city of tolerance by welcoming gay marriage.  Although it did not bode well nationally, it helps make SF the most tolerant city in the US and achieve much more internationally.

Lately, the energy crisis and global warming have been dogging the economy as well as cause concern for many people.  The biggest challenge we have is that everyone in the US wants to have bigger cars, Read more »

Behavior on MUNI Trains
December 17th, 2007

Please require MUNI drivers to call Security when passengers display unruly behavior, enabling Security personnel to remove them from the trains.  (no criminal charges needed, just removal)  Without this requirement, riding MUNI can be unpleasant, even frightening and surely prevents many people from taking public transportation.

Home Depot on Alemany
December 5th, 2007

I heard that big chain stores will be banned on Bernal Heights. What is going on with this unwanted Home Depot. The site looks terrible after so many years of been neglected. Can we just have a nice facility there instead. How about a nice Ice Hockey ring with a sports bar on top, our own SF Hockey team, a sport facility for all (children and adults) and for all of the children in the area and  keep them active and out of trouble.

We should have 2 kinds of Taxi Cars
December 5th, 2007

Not a solution but just a happy comment. My daughter Emma (12 years old) posted an idea on taxi cab and how we should have Hybrids in the city. Well she has seen some of them around and is very happy about it as she thinks that it was her idea and that she did make a difference. Thank you.

Tell that to Ivan whatever.

Mortgage Crisis
December 4th, 2007

The current bail out of the sub-prime mortgages is unfair to the rest of the population, who are having to suffer because of the ignorance of a few.  Instead, we should allow all individuals to write off all financial losses on our taxes.  This would be fair to everyone.  Today, we can only write off losses against gains.  But allowing all losses to be written off even without gains, would allow the sub-prime mortgages losses to be written off by individuals but not the mortgage companies.  Mortgage companies took the risks and approved the sub-prime losses.  Hence, the mortgage companies Read more »

Increase Bus Fares, Decrease Monthly Pass
December 4th, 2007

Current pricing for monthly bus pass is $45 and current one-time use of bus is $1.50.  Let's decrease the monthly pass to $25, but increase the one-time use fee to $2.00.  This will, I think, get the people who just get on the bus without paying, to pay for the lower one time fee.  This will also increase revenues from tourists.  Note that no public transit system is as efficient as Japan's, bu they pay about double or more what we pay.  For instance: A bus ride is based on how far you go, so 50 min bus ride may Read more »

You are draining our country of its resources and putting an increasing burden on our tax paying citizen.

Recycling Bins
November 19th, 2007

Hello Mayor Newsom,

Have you ever considered having TSA style locks placed on the blue recycling bins in San Francisco? I think this would help a lot with the homeless problem (particularly at the recycling center in GG park) and also help to protect people from identity theft.

The locks could have two keys one for the bin user and another general key for the waste management workers.

The money the city saves not having to pay for bottles & cans that are stolen out of recycling bins would probably pay for the locks Read more »

LGBT Rights
November 16th, 2007

1.  LGBT Rights - Try LGBT essay topics in curriculum.  They can be diced up decently with few objections.

2. Gansta Rap - Encourage Anti-Gangsta Rap.  It can sound just as good.

Signal light at Sunset and Quintara
November 14th, 2007

Too many accidents at Sunset Blvd and Quintara. There are 3 bus stops. There is a high school at the intersection, a middle school 2 blocks away and an elementary school 2 blocks away. There were 2 accidents over the weekend. A light pole was demolished in the last 2 months. We need a signal light, or at least a school crossing light for pedestrians when crossing. Please make a change before someone is killed. You should not have to RUN across the street to beat the speeding traffic! Thank you.

Close the Bay

If you can close the airport because of weather, why not close San Francisco Bay for bad weather. No ships can move until fog lifts !
