In several other countries I’ve traveled to, the buses actually have two employees - the bus driver, and a "fare collector." The benefits of this are that you don’t have to have exact change, because the fare collector can make change out of the box for you, there is less possibility of riding the bus without paying (side and rear doors are for exiting only, and often the driver will stand by the middle door to prevent people from entering until all passengers are on the bus) and there is a person to keep order in between stops in case people get rowdy.
