Get rid of the lottery. It creates many more problems than it solves, and doesn’t solve the main problem it’s supposed to. Getting your child into a public school has become a nightmarish process. People end up having to drive their kids to school, even if they live within walking distance to some schools, because their kids don’t go to the nearby-schools. Many people end up sending their kids to private schools (even if they can’t really afford it) who would have gone to public schools because they feel the school they get into isn’t good enough or close enough. The schools which are lower quality, racially or economically homogeneous have remained that way. The lottery simply creates additional problems for everyone involved. If this system stays in place, I would like to see statistics proving that it’s benefiting the city and our public school system (e.g. comparative numbers about # of students, scores, diversity, etc. from before and after this system went into affect).
