Something has to be done to change the San Francisco culture of running red lights. I have lived in Boston, Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles and haver never seen drivers so accustomed to blowing through red lights. It is an extremely dangerous situation. Yellow lights mean "SLOW DOWN down" not "SPEED UP". Contributing to the problem is the short duration of yellow lights. In San Francisco they are much shorter than in other cities, which can make it too dangerous at times for a driver to slow and stop at the intersection for fear of being hit from behind. If the driver decides it’s best to speed up to avoid being rear-ended, then the brief yellow light causes the driver to run the artificial red light. Please begin a public service campaign on Yellow Means SLOW DOWN, not SPEED UP, bolster the effort by writing tickets for offenders, and lengthen the duration of yellow lights.

The same holds true for public vehicles managed by the city (e.g. Muni and city vehicles) as they are agents of the city and when they run the red or yellow, and cause an accident, the city is vicariously liable and the residents pay out the nose either in taxes, increase fares, less services…
