The City of Phoenix, AZ like many others, has a wonderful municipal trash and recycling program that San Francisco could mimic. The City of Phoenix provides large plastic covered containers to all residential customers. One receptacle is green; it is for trash and garbage that is not recycled. The other can is blue for all recyclable items (code 1 and 2 plastics, code 6 foam, glass, paper, advertising mail, magazines, newspapers, cardboard/chipboard, milk cartons, aluminum, and metal). The green container is picked up once a week on Monday or Tuesday and the blue on Wednesday or Thursday. Our residential waste services cost $24.45 per month. The city recycles the items picked up and recoups part of the costs. Phoenix City employees also pick up large items at the curbside that will not fit in containers once every four months–for free. For more information see www.phoenix.gov/GARBAGE or call 602-262-7251.
