I recently moved to a new apartment. At my old house, I parked in a spot I paid for, but in my new place, I had to park on the street. It’s hard enough trying to find parking in SF, but if you don’t have a parking sticker, finding a street with no sticker requirement AND no street sweeping the following morning is nearly impossible.
So I went to the the DPT, paperwork filled out, money in hand (after spending all day at the DMV because the DPT told me to make sure my address was current on my registration) ready to pay for a parking sticker so that finding a spot to park in at night would only take me half an hour instead of a full hour. When I finally reached the counter, the DPT lady told me I couldn’t buy a sticker because the area of the street outside my address doesn’t require a sticker. "But three houses down requires a sticker, it’s a P zone, as are all the streets surrounding my house." She said, "Not in front of your house, and I can only give you a sticker associated with your address." I live in a high-rise, so there are approximately 300 people trying to park in the 3 spots in front of my address. Who in this city, EVER parks in front of their own house? Everyone I know parks at least 3 blocks away, if they’re lucky. I said "If the three blocks around me all require stickers, and I’m here with money in my hand for you, so that I can obey YOUR parking laws, why can’t I just have a parking sticker? It’s not like I’m asking for something for free here, and you guys are the ones that made up these silly stickers in the first place." She says, "You are only supposed to park in the spot associated with your address. That’s just how the law works." I said, "Then everyone who parks in front of my building who doesn’t live there should get a ticket? Then everyone who has a sticker on their car, if they are parked in a "no sticker zone" should get a ticket, because obviously if they have a sticker, they don’t live on that street!" I even talked to the head of DPT, and she said she always had to park 3 blocks away from her own house, and she sympathized with me, but she still wouldn’t sell me a parking sticker!
I’m so mad that DPT made me wait all day at DMV, and then come back to DPT only to tell me "tough luck." Even though three houses down from me requires a sticker, DPT won’t let me pay my dues to follow THEIR laws. I think this is ridiculous. I am just trying to be a good citizen, follow the rules, and buy the right permits.
Solution: LET ME PAY FOR A PARKING STICKER. I JUST WANT TO FOLLOW YOUR LAWS!
