Fully fund NCLB so every child’s needs can truly be met (meaning beyond the political rhetoric.) The "lottery" system for choosing SF schools to attend is ruining integration. I work at a school where 2 Caucasian children wait for a school bus to take them to a school outside their neighborhood, yet they do not attend their neighborhood school whose main demographic is Latino and some African-American, many of whom are from rough neighborhoods. And many of the parents who send their children to our school, do so to be away from what they deem "unsafe" schools in Bayview. I realize parents have a choice and should do what they can to get the best for their progeny, but isn’t it sad that our city has such economic/educational disparity? The kids know it. Can’t we find a way to create better academic achievement and opportunities for every child of SF? Every school should have adequate counseling services for students with IEPs and issues at home that create behavior problems in class and on the playground. School lunches should be improved to encourage participation and model healthy eating. Class size should be reduced to promote better differentiation so struggling students, as well as unchallenged students and those in between, can thrive at their levels. We need to promote more authentic learning that builds on our students backgrounds and diverse cultures. That way all students can learn from one another and we can integrate it with the standards. We need access for all to excellent after school enrichment and tutoring programs, parent education on how to consistently and effectively discipline their children and promote healthy habitual behavior. We should also teach parents how to academically support their children. We need to model and teach teamwork skills. There is a lot more, but it does take a village to raise a child and the kids in this city deserve the best. Their is so much potential, innovation and intelligence that goes wasted–into dead-end jobs, drugs, gangs, etc… The children should be a priority–they will be taking care of us one day.
