1) I complain about the rude drivers in the city who run stop signs and don’t care if you’re in the cross walk or not. I don’t know how to fix this except to perhaps have enforcement campaigns work certain areas of the city. I jog through the city streets and every single time I encounter a careless driver who makes me fear for my safety. Also, the heavy traffic is really frustrating, but I don’t know what to suggest about that.
2) Parking is obviously a problem in this city, which leads to double parking which is another problem. Perhaps we could eliminate or reduce the number of some of the "loading zone only" parking spaces that are in front of apartment buildings or condos. For example, there are 3 on the south side of Calif. Street between Jones and Leavenworth (2 at the east corner, or at least it seems as if it’s 2). Also, there are so many construction-related "temporary" restricted parking signs around the city. I’d say limit these to half, if that’s possible.
3) Cigarette smoking has really become a problem in this city. I can not even plan to eat lunch outside in Redwood Park next to the Pyramid Bldg., because the smokers have taken over. Same goes for the outdoor areas near the Embarcadero buildings and around Golden Gate Apts. Often I have to move 3 times at lunchtime because a smoker sits next to me an lights up while I’m eating. I experience this in this city more than any other I travel to. Perhaps having designated clearly stated non-smoking areas outdoors could help, or starting some sort of "respect your fellow citizen" campaign might help; although I’m not too optimistic about that because I don’t think too many smokers would abide or care.
4) The noise level in the city is pretty bad. It’s worse than NYC where I used to live, particularly the sirens and loud motorcycles. In saying this, I totally respect our police and fire departments, and understand the importance of emergency needs. Perhaps not using the air horns in the middle of the night or early morning might help. Also, in NYC it seems as if the volume of the sirens is lower.
5) The sidewalks are dirty, particularly the dog poo and dark spots all over (gum?). I walk to work and back and witness this all the time.
7) I love your idea about planting more trees. Again, look at NYC, where trees are common (except in mid-town and parts of the downtown area).
I come home from a trip and can’t stand to walk out of the BART station at Powell St. because of the harassment one receives from the "riff raff" all over that area, and the cigarette smoke that hits you. Driving on 6th Street toward the freeway is awful, too, due to the people slowing meandering their way across the street, not in a cross walk area, and then yelling at you if you have to drive forward. I really don’t know what to suggest about these complaints.
These problems were here before you assumed the position of Mayor (especially Muni and the homeless). You have many challenges, which seem overwhelming. I hope my suggestions might help just a bit.
