Dear Gavin,
I think one solution for the Tenderloin would be to make it hard for people to deal/do drugs on the street. Start busting people, start a police presence in the area, use undercover cops. Don’t make a huge deal out of it, just do it. The cops can work in teams of 2-4 and systematically jail people. Make it hard for people to smoke crack on the street. Make them scared of jail again. Might I remind you that plenty of children are in the area. Another idea for improving the TL is to paint the street lines again. The main thing that sticks out to me is that the streets in the TL look so worn down, faded white and cracked up. But two blocks away, near the Hilton, the street lines are bright, sold white. It must seem to the TL people that the city does not care about their roads. The last thing I would like to say is about the homeless. I live seeing lots of homeless and I understand everyone’s frustration with the issue. The bottom line is that they are still people. I read an article in Jacksonville, FL that said their city ends up paying about $100,000 per emergency room visit that a homeless person makes, usually because of the harsh condition from living on the street. However, this issue can be avoided by spending about $23,000 per homeless person for housing and care. So, it may seem like a big expense to house and care for these people, but you are actually saving the hospitals money. I’m sure it would costs a little more than $23,000 to put someone up in SF, but the hospital bills would also be higher, too. I think we could building housing for them near the UCSF Mission Bay Campus.
