I doubt I am alone in feeling that MUNI is the aspect of city government that most effects my day-to-day life. I just read in the San Francisco Examiner that 16.8% of MUNI drivers are absent from work on any given day, and that that shortfall is made up by other drivers being paid overtime. This seems like an extraordinarily number to me, which must have a highly negative impact on MUNIs budget and the ability of buses to run on time (which is really what matters most to me). I think any effort to improve MUNI should start here…with a crackdown on unnecessary absences, efforts to move those drivers whose personal circumstances require them to miss work often into other jobs or possibly part-time work, and an attempt to attract more highly qualified drivers by making MUNI a more appealing place to work.
