It is very difficult for the average person to find any information regarding meetings held by departments, committees and commissions. You have to go the city web site, then find the department/commission home page, the agenda/meeting schedule page and then select the date you are interested in. It seems that a majority do not list their schedules and rarely post meeting minutes. Despite the fact that certain committees and commissions are supposed to meet on a schedule, many consistently cancel meetings and do not announce when the next one will be.
Why not have a link on the City’s home page to a master calendar that would list every meeting of all the committees and commissions, etc and when the agenda is published activate a link to the agenda page or at least a link to the page that lists all the agendas and meeting minutes. This should also include department sponsored public forums; any City sponsored meeting or information session of any kind. There have been several of these that I would have gone to only I found out about them when it was too late to change my plans or I found out after the fact.
Something similar to the calendar used on 311 would be good. Although it does not include City committee/commission information it is a pretty informative calendar and yet it is buried on the 311 site under the FAQ. The events calendar link on the City’s home page is lacking in information. The home page meeting agenda link simply sends one to a list of departments.
If you truly want citizens involved then make it as easy as possible for them to find the information.
