Hello Mayor Newsom,
I am so glad that you have created this website! Have wanted to share ideas with you for a while. Just returned from 2 weeks in Europe and was impressed with some of the environmental things they do to conserve energy that would be great for our country and, of course, San Francisco is the city to lead the way…
1. Have lights for public areas set on motion sensors to conserve energy. This would be great for restaurants, stairwells in apartments, parking garages, bathrooms, office buildings, etc. Why do we need to have the lights on in empty office buildings all night long?? What a waste of energy!
Light switches could shut off after a few minutes instead of staying on continuously in common areas.
2. Have water in the public bathrooms in the toilets & faucets better controlled by motion sensors too. There are so many times that toilets continuously flush and waste water.
3. Heavy taxes for people who want to drive big cars such as SUV’s & oversized trucks. They are unnessary & waste gasoline, parking spaces, and are pollutants.
4. Seattle offers free rides on buses in the downtown area. This is great because it promotes public transportation. There could be jitneys offered on major streets for a low cost to also increase transportation options.
5. I have lived in San Francisco since 1981 and each year become more disgusted with how FILTHY DIRTY this city has become! There are so many homeless people sitting on the streets that need something to do. I know that you are in favor of cleaning up the city and helping the homeless. The best thing you can do for someone is make them feel valuable by giving them work to do. Isn’t there a way to get people off the streets and on the streets cleaning the sidewalks and public areas?! It is embarrassing to show people around this beautiful city when it is so dirty. Union Square & Market Street are horrible, for example. The sense of pride is waning in this city because it is so neglected. Please put these people to work and make them and us proud to live in the most beautiful city in the country! My husband is a psychologist and says even mentally ill people can sweep the streets.
How about giving shop owners the responsibility of hosing down their sidewalks like they do in Europe? How about bringing back the WPA projects like they had during the depression. We certainly have the people around that need work to do. The key to success is INCENTIVE, we ALL need it and feel good when we achieve the goal!
I would personally be happy to offer my time to work and share ideas with a committee helping San Francisco to continue to be known as a leader in innovation and a working example to the rest of the country!
Thank you again for this excellent website and for your open mindedness and leadership!
Sincerely,
Lori
