I think two of the problems facing this city, an inordinately high homeless population, and the quality of life criminals, can be addressed simultaneously with one humane solution: a tent city/jail.
Take a nice piece of unused land, erect a tent city, put a fence around it and let the homeless live there. Naturally, many are mentally ill, so they can occupy the hospital beds as needed, but the rest of the scafflaws can just live obliviously, peacefully and happily out of doors, as they so love to do, in a tent city away from the civilized citizens struggling to make a living in this city. Then, dedicate a portion of the city to the offenders of ‘quality of life’ crimes that is being discussed. They can be housed there, and made to do work to upkeep the tent city.
This solution will be a hugely successful means of cleaning our streets, saving millions of dollars by not having an ambulance, firetruck, and 3 police cars pull every drunk out of our gutters, save billions on jail costs, and do so in a humane manner that gives everyone what they want.

I have often wondered why someone didn’t do as suggested above but using obsolete military bases. When many military bases were shut down they were simply abandoned. Yet they are designed to house large numbers of people, provide meals, entertainment, medical facilities, training, etc. If these military bases were good enough for our soldiers they ought to be good enough for our homeless. Of course the “progressives” would scream “abuse”, but when you have the land, the buildings, and the facilities all available, it seems like a no brainer to me.

We definitely need somewhere for the homeless to be. I would like to see them out of my neighborhood. The police can’t do anything about them. They break into cars and steal everything…including the trash. They sleep in the cars they break into, but the police can’t move them along unless they actually catch them doing something or they are blocking traffic. So, I think we need a somewhere for them to go and then the police need to have the authority to put them there.

Typical NIMBY responses. Why not just put them in internment camps and let them live with the Japanese? You can take a tiger out of the jungle, but you can’t take the jungle out of the tiger. Once you give a homeless person a home, they aren’t homeless, they are just poor, not unlike Erin or Gretchen. And thats the last thing the city needs.
