I recently set up a video surveillance system for a store here in Modesto (I’m a Chronicle reader) and wanted to express some things we discovered. First, Ebay was the best deal for equipment and hong kong dealers better yet with 10 days wait for delivery.
Trying to solve our night surveillance issues we learned that the night vision cameras are basically a camera that operates in dim light and they have an led flashlight to light the darkness, more led’s the brighter. Problem is that to see what’s going on you need to see the area from a distance and the led’s aren’t much good beyond 30′. You need to install a regular night light to light up the area and better picture was from a regular bulb not a flood light.
If we were to make a better system I would think that cameras on Ebay that detect motion and then zoom to that motion (judges what distance) would be the ideal. I have read that there could be a problem with the revolving cameras not getting the action. Takes a lot of trial and error to get the lighting just right and that’s frustrating.
You must have a recording computer, dvr, that records only when there’s action or else you spend days trying to find it when reviewing the recordings. It can’t pickup traffic movement if that confuses the reviewer. Possibly one idea is to have a conventional motion sensor that would connect up a camera (a switch) such that it begins to send images. We couldn’t see faces well, an improvement on resolution would help. Also we thought that a distant camera could find the action, and then we might install a close up camera such as at a door way that would catch the face.
We use a linux module that plugs into a computer like an ide with software already installed, our burglar installer sold it to boss at a premium but I’ve seen them on Ebay for $150. It’s reliable and has run 24hrs/day for the last year.
I’m just a handyman, sort of special projects type who works for a florist with other projects. Like to read all about San Francisco and would offer this help if I can. Keep up the good work.
Sincerly
