Thank goodness Earthlink backed out of the deal. This is a golden opportunity to move on to more pressing matters. "Free" WiFi was never, of course, going to be free — there would be substantial disruptive costs to building this system and granting a quasi-monopoly to Google/Earthlink that would have hurt SF in the short and long term. And SF running the system itself is even worse! It takes courage and leadership to change course when it’s called for. This is one of those times. Forget "Free" WiFi and move on!
