Why doesn't San Francisco send the notorious South Florida-based Lennar Corporation home and hire locally?

I live in an area with trash pick-ups scheduled at 9 or 10pm in one direction, and as early as 6am at the other end of the block. Part of the noise (besides the beeping and banging) is the loud noise of the metal lids on the dumpsters. It seems an obvious solution would be some sort of plastic or rubber top that would not bang -- and would also be much easier for the people dealing with them. Seems simple, but I understand there is some sort of ordinance requiring metal lids -- is that true?

Let's take down all of the hanging flower baskets and use the resources to make our neighborhood safe. I've noticed that all of the flowers in the Civic Center and around City Hall look healthy and fresh - but along 3rd Street especially between Folsom & Townsend - they are quickly drying out, many have dead spots and trash in them. Maybe the city has already cut back on maintaining them. The real priority for lower Rincon Hill/Eastern SOMA should be protection. My friend's car was broken into two weeks ago, one of my neighbors was raped and a guy Read This Post »

I would like voters and possibly the City Attorney to have choices as to whom is selected for the Rent Board. The Mayor's Office would continue to be included as well. As the rules now exist, there is a substantial conflict of interest when landlords have exponential decision making influence over the tenant population.

The problem is that hard working citizens of San Francisco, when they arrive home after a days work, cannot even park in their own driveway to unload groceries for their children. The solution is to change the ordinance so that a parking ticket is only issued if the sidewalk is actually blocked so as to prevent pedestrians from passing. Another solution would be to have fewer meter maids and more SFPD officers, so that some of the actual, serious crimes that face us, like car theft, can be dealt with, rather than spending all of our enforcement efforts on punishing Read This Post »

According to the SF Chronicle, we are "down to 280 encampments..." in Golden Gate Park. Hello? Shouldn't this be ZERO? Get out a fire tanker truck and go in and hose out each encampment. I don't care if they think of themselves as "harmless eccentrics," there is nothing harmless about living in a camper, RV, car, tent or tarp unless you are in a campground and San Francisco's parks are NOT campgrounds.
Maybe it's time to forget the homeless "shelters" and go outside the city and build a "homeless campground." Get GGNRA to donate some land, add porta potties, install Read This Post »

Why don't we add locks to the carts, so that they can't be taken off the supermarket property? There is already a system in place in DC. If you go to Safeway and try to take your shopping cart out of the parking lot it locks up, the wheels don't move and guess what you can't take it with you. This would reduce the number of carts being used by the homeless all over our city. It's a very simple solution.

In my youth I enjoyed riding the cable cars as part of my transportation around The City. Transfers or 25¢ was all it cost and I was on a Cable Car! I still ride them, though far less frequently due to cost and limited space, but tourists know they are riding history and it makes up a big part of many of their trips. Because the cable cars are so huge a part of a trip to SF the people who operate them are in a very unique position. Good brakemen make it an even more joyous experience - ringing Read This Post »

I drove for Luxor in the early-mid 1980s. To get quality cab drivers there has to be the possibility of earning "good" money. Putting even more cabs on the street will make that even less of a possibility than it already is. The biggest problem is the simplest. Cabs change shifts (for the most part) at the wrong times! Too many shifts change at 5PM. ABSURD! If the shift changes were switched to be mostly from 2-4 PM there would be cabs aplenty on the street at 5PM when they are in high demand.
We drivers told the companies this 20 Read This Post »

As a proud San Franciscan I go out of my way to help tourists (or anyone) with directions, local history, recommendations or to take pictures of them on their cameras. I think The City should solicit such involvement from San Franciscans. Sure - we have kinder people here than most cities (though not as kind as we were in the past to be sure), but not everyone will go out of their way to help people - and let them know - and feel - the unique loving quality of The City. Give people a pass to something (a free Read This Post »

Unfortunately, the longer they are in jail, the more friends they make and the more likely they are to stay in SF when released. If they do the crime, they do the time. Then they should be sent back where they came from.

Most cars are speeding in s.f. and we need to make the speed limit 25 mph. A lot of jay walkers and people are getting killed because they do not come to a complete stop at corners turning and the pedestrian comes first. Put cameras taking pictures of speeding, and red light runners and give them a $500.00 fine or do community service work. Have a great day.

A cute little crab ("no dumping") sign marked the storm drain, showing where to poke the stick to clear leaves away. Then the intersection and walkway drained so quickly it was fun to watch. Crab signs might be too expensive to install on pre-existing sidewalks. Would it be a good idea to paint small aqua arrows on curbs above the storm drains that routinely get blocked and hidden by puddles - the ones DPW gets called to clear a lot? Then maybe folks could just clear them quickly and spare DPW on busy, rainy days.

Dear Mayor Newsom,
San Francisco had its own Statue of Liberty on Mt. Olympus at or near the geographic center of the city. When it was dedicated by Sutro in the 1880s it was intended to be a monument to the triumph of light (or "Liberty Enlightening the People") At the dedication it was said that it would be an imperishable symbol. But it was perishable and was torn down leaving only the base. The light held by the statue is gone. I am proposing and seeking your assistance in reviving the site and rekindling the light in what is a many Read This Post »

If everyone who values fitness - and everyone with membership to a gym - took one vegetable bag from home, used it inside out like a rubber glove, and "touched their toes" just one more time to pick up a piece of trash or two, and dropped it in the very next trash bin they see, they'd soon realize they feel much greater happiness. It's easy as a walk in the park.

Act Locally lets ideas fly right up to the top - what a fabulous way to lead and encourage proactive people! I let a draft dream fly, requesting a reality check - that arrow was WAY off target (fortunately, I think it also went to the wrong email - LOL).
But it got me thinking: I get to state all my views openly and passionately, but our Mayor can't just speak out. He has to carefully consider and balance many different views from all sorts of people, weigh them all, along with input from the team of folks working for Read This Post »

I have noticed that often times when people run red lights they tend to run them because they are trying to get through before the light turns from yellow to red. I have also noticed that as one light turns red the intersecting light would turn green. If a delay were put in place so that both lights were red for perhaps 3 seconds before the one turns green this delay could perhaps save lives and prevent injuries. This would assure that when the light turns green - those who go through it will less likely be met by someone Read This Post »

Eradicate recycling centers. Homeless people live and scavenge neighborhoods that are close to recycling centers, like the Bayview.
