Concerning Chronicle article "S.F. Boom Boosts Mayor". We expect Mayor Newsom and Board of Supervisors to create a better San Francisco. Though they have an effect, to actually transform San Francisco into the place we say we yearn for, each San Franciscan must change. You and I have contributed individually in making San Francisco and our callousness, insensitivity and self-centeredness maintain what it is.
Virtually everybody in San Francisco lives better, longer lives with playthings the wealthy of 50 years ago could not imagine. Nevertheless personal wealth and comfort remains paramount, we continue to fight or resist – everybody being against somebody, all struggling to arrive at a safe and comfortable place, oblivious that this is at the expense of our collective well-being.
‘culture’ is more than merely art, music and literature; it really is a cultivating of goodness. Each of us contributes individually to cultural growth or to social decay; our social and physical environment is the result. We have the money and resources necessary to actually transform San Francisco, yet without the clarity and resolve we wallow in abuse and neglect. Essentially, to transform San Francisco we must change and not expect someone else to clear away the mess we help create. Each of us can promote goodness as a leading growth industry – as opposed to the myopic pursuits of tourism and biotech – and thereby enhance quality of life and personal wellbeing. Naturally people feel better and treat one another with greater respect and consideration, contributing, again, to a cultivating of goodness.
