I have noticed that often times when people run red lights they tend to run them because they are trying to get through before the light turns from yellow to red. I have also noticed that as one light turns red the intersecting light would turn green. If a delay were put in place so that both lights were red for perhaps 3 seconds before the one turns green this delay could perhaps save lives and prevent injuries. This would assure that when the light turns green - those who go through it will less likely be met by someone racing through the tale end of their yellow light thus reducing the odds of a side impact. Also, many of the stop signs in this city are obscured. Perhaps a city-wide effort can be set in motion to make certain that all stop signs are highly visible. Trees should be trimmed back to allow for visibility. Signs can also be made larger such as they are along Crissy fields. Wide yellow stripe markings designating crosswalks can also help to alert drivers to come to a complete stop. finally, we need to protect bicyclists. Designated bike lanes here in sf are not safe enough. They are narrow without any protective guards. In Copenhagen, Denmark and many other cities I have been to, bikers are held in high regard. After all, they do a service for the individuals (great workout) and the environment by reducing pollution. We should offer them harbor - if a safer path is provided for bikers this would encourage more bikes on our roads and would help in greening our city.
