Hello Gavin,
My wife and I are SF residents and have been traveling around the country and Canada for nearly 2 years. We both sent in the absentee ballot form and stipulated that the ballot be mailed to a different address (not our SF address). This is clearly stated as an option on the absentee ballot form. Whoever was responsible at City Hall sent it incorrectly to our home address instead. Because of this error we were unable to vote. We were surprised that both of our absentee ballots were sent to the wrong address and wondered whether MANY others had a similar problem.
We called the office at city hall responsible for this and they sent us via e-mail a copy of the ballot, but it was too late to mail it in.
We have a recommendation:
Allow the absentee ballot itself to be downloaded from the Internet. We would print it, sign it, and mail it in. This would have allowed us to vote instead of waiting for the delivery of the ballot which never arrived. We understand downloading the ballot could be miss used, but so could any absentee ballot which needs verification.
Perhaps other safeguards could be provided, but the recommendation is to have the ballot itself available on-line rather than waiting for mail at a remote location.
SF is a leader in future thought and this proposal just makes sense.
Please let us know if this recommendation can be implemented in time for the upcoming election.
We consider voting a requirement to be good citizens and outraged that we were unable to vote because of a mistake at city hall.
