Stop increasing the amount of street cleaning in the Mission
June 15th, 2007 8:14 am

The streets aren't dirty; the sidewalks are.  We can barely find a place to park as it is.  Instead, increase sidewalk cleaning.  Put as many sidewalk cleaners in the Mission on a daily basis as you do meter maids, and the Mission will sparkle.  Name Withheld Read This Post »

Office Space for City Departments
June 14th, 2007 9:52 am

I think the City of San Francisco should purchase the AAA building on Van Ness Avenue (near City Hall). It could be used for City Offices - this would save rent that the City now pay to rent space -- any extra space could be rented out to Corporations or Companies. Yvonne Eckhoff Read This Post »

Traffic Congestion
June 13th, 2007 9:48 am

Congestion pricing on bridge tolls--no additional administrative overhead since the infrastructure is already in place. NYC is considering such a move, and London has already done it. The bridges would be much smaller scale, but so easy to do! Ben Elchenberg Read This Post »

More Treatment Centers
June 13th, 2007 9:47 am

In response to your letter I would like to submit the following suggestions for improvements to make San Francisco better in the future. First I want to start with the problem the drug addicts and the homeless. According to my knowledge San Francisco have not enough treatment facilities to get people off drugs and for this reason I would suggest that the City of San Francisco and  organizations working with this problem already open up an additional two or three treatment centers for people looking for help. The homeless people who are not addicted to drugs and get welfare money for Read This Post »

Everyone wins with a wind horn
June 13th, 2007 9:43 am

Dear Mayor, I have a suggestion and am not sure if this is the correct venue for its airing but here goes anyway. I believe that San Francisco is sorely missing a wind horn system. "A wind horn?" you might ask? Well, upon doing some amateur observation in the park over the last few weeks, it seems that there is a large number of kites and frisbees stuck in trees in Golden Gate Park and in the Presidio as well. We have a foghorn system, why not have a wind horn that blows when the air is too blustery for the [safe]throwing of Read This Post »

19th Avenue
June 13th, 2007 9:41 am

Build a 'cross town tunnel' down 19th avenue.  It's called cut and cover.  19th avenue could then become an Octavia Blvd. for local traffic only.  Brian Nores Read This Post »

GHG and San Francisco Cars
June 12th, 2007 2:48 pm

Can San Francisco afford gas guzzlers from environmental, health and safety standpoint? Every time I see a big gas guzzling luxury car or an SUV that is violating a traffic law I find myself muttering: what kind of country do I live in? I have never understood why our society rewards the gas guzzlers more than denizens who do everything to reduce global warming.  The price of violating a traffic law is the same irrespective of what car you drive despite the fact that a larger vehicle causes more harm to the immediate society.  Pedestrians and bicyclist are at a greater Read This Post »

Graffiti Solution
June 12th, 2007 2:46 pm

A law aimed at the perpetrator, not the property owner/victim.  Also, the law must have a strong enough sentence to matter, or there's no point bothering to try and enforce it.  An estimate should be created for all costs pertaining to the apprehension including: painting over graffiti, police officers, judges, court reporters, secretaries, prosecuting attorneys pay and costs, etc., all jail costs including food, electricity, janitorial, etc.  They should pay for everything - taxpayers shouldn't have to pick up the tab.  If they're under 18, their parents should be held accountable.  If they own a house or a car, their Read This Post »

NO priority for SF residents at CCSF RN program
June 12th, 2007 2:45 pm

CCSF's RN admissions policy  needs to give SF residents priority over non-residents.  All other Bay area community colleges give their residents preference in the admission process into their RN programs. Regina Burke Read This Post »

Pesticides in Parks

Water Shortage
June 11th, 2007 9:47 am

At one of your meetings you mention that water will go up in price.  What about handling the water shortage situation like we did in 1977, when the water department sent everyone a letter to only utilize a certain amount of water.  If you went over that amount you were penalize.  The water department issued you how much water you could used.   The water shortage was crucial then, we were limited and it last for awhile.  When it was over it was a relieved.  Same thing when we had suffered through a shortage of gasoline.   I remember those days and Read This Post »

19th Avenue
June 11th, 2007 9:33 am

Mayor Newsom - I live in the Parkside District. I have four school aged kids. They attend local schools. As you know, 19th Avenue is a free way with stop lights running through a residential area.  I am on the CAC for the SFCTA and understand many of the complexities of dealing with this stretch of road. However, to mitigate some of the danger couldn't a series of raised walkways over 19th Avenue be built so people do not have to try to walk across the road itself. I know this costs money, but some sort of modest solution is Read This Post »

DBI and Assessors office should work together
June 8th, 2007 11:13 am

Here's another idea to collect some due revenue ....  Every time the DBI finds a property owner that has started construction without a permit, the Assessors office should be notified, and if proper, a new assessment should be made on the property. Shaun Hughes Read This Post »

Reducing cars in S.F.
June 7th, 2007 9:07 am

Charge a tax for every person/home in S.F. that has more than one car.  Use that money to fund Muni and support CarShare. ANOTHER IDEA: For every residence that has one car or none, give them a "coupon" to CarShare or a discount on Muni passes. Maureen Persico Read This Post »

Pick one for our pack
June 7th, 2007 9:05 am

"Dog" parks are actually "people" parks where people recreate and communicate without social division; these inclusive communities enrich our City's spirit and deserve a healthy share of space. The vast majority of responsible dog people are routinely criticized for the mistakes of a few.  I'll keep encouraging dog people to "pick one up for the pack" as well as cleaning up after their own.  There's much more human trash out there but good dog people may pick some of that up, too.  Every little bit helps.  The City's cleaner than ever and it's getting better all the time -- it's Read This Post »

Hotline to Report Misdeamenors
June 7th, 2007 9:04 am

Raise pubic awareness and deter criminals who deface our city, scam MUNI rides, or engage in crime. Instill a hot line to call in - or text in - maybe mobile phone pics - or any crime in the city.  This can be used for leads to catch criminals and deter future delinquent actions. Recycling at City Events
June 7th, 2007 9:03 am

Please! Provide several well-marked recycling bins for plastic water bottles at ALL city events. I was dismayed at your recent town hall meeting at Excelsior Boys & Girls Club- and at other recent city-sponsored events- to see all the water bottles and soda cans going into the trash. It's so simple, Mayor! Aren't we supposed to be a GREEN city? Sue Weaver Read This Post »

Green Solutions
June 7th, 2007 9:02 am

One of our huge problems is limiting green solutions by focusing on the technology end of things.  How much energy do we use to transport water to the City that could be retrieved from the aquifer.  How much energy  do we use repairing flood damage to our streets, hills and such?  We could reduce that immediately by changing zoning regulations to legalize and even require homes and small businesses to allow run-off from roofs to reach the ground and soak into the aquifer.  It could work just like the Friend of the Urban Forest tree planting program.  Have a non Read This Post »

Visible Green Projects
June 7th, 2007 9:01 am

Hi, One thing I've noticed over the years is that people like to visibly see their tax dollars spent near their homes. An excellent example is the State's Safe Routes to School Initiative. I think we need to encourage more projects like this. For example, look at the SW 12th Avenue Green Street Project on the Portland State University campus, which has received a national award of honor from the American Society of Landscape Architects. How about a project just like this within every supervisor's district? As a bonus if you can make this happen before Election Day, I will promise Read This Post »
